The Fire Inside

We do this thing we love so much, Each and every Saturday night. Sometimes we take the checkered flag, And sometimes we have to fight. A big dirt oval is where we play, That's where we truely feel alive. It's not for the money or glory at all, We're jsut searchin for that perfect drive. It's where grown adults become kids again, The troubles of the world will have to wait. If I just get a run commin out of two, I could pass this guy down the long back straight. I know that fire that burns inside, The dream to go big time. I know that fire all to well, Cause your dreams are just like mine.
The skies were bright and sunny at the fairgrounds track that day, A championship within his reach at his hometown speedway. A season filled with ups and downs, from DNFs to wins, It is on this late September night, his test of will begins. It all started five months ago, the weekly wars began, In front of crews and families and thousands of crazed fans. That cool late April Saturday which seemed so long ago, Still wearing gloves and stocking hats...the recently melted snow. Two feature wins, a runner-up and a fourth out of the gate, A lead of 18 points led expectations to be great. The headlines clipped and on the wall, the sponsors rolling in, He could not have asked a better way for it all to begin. From there his focus turns to May, with his fortunes not the same, Not to mention two lost motors...one blown, one to the claim. The month before now blurry and the questions more clear, Doubting shocks, springs, and set-up..."Are we running the right gear?" His point lead disappeared as he dropped back to mid-pack, Only to feel rejuvination in winning back-to-back. The end of June upon him and mid-season closing in, The temperatures were rising and the patience growing thin. An over heating motor and a tire not keeping air, Were just two of many setbacks upon him which would wear. He entered late July a monstrous 18 from the lead, And strung together some good runs to close within three. Wheel-to-wheel he would go with the leader of the class, Bringing home another win, adversity he'd surpass. Momentum now felt on his side, going down the stretch, Five weeks to go and back on top, the "fever" he did catch. Another roller coaster ride the next four weeks would bring, A hard roll in the second turn, man parts need replacing. Dollars going out the door as quick as they were earned, Sometimes wondering why he raced? For is this what he yearned? Again he found a way to make the numerous mends, Hammering out the dents and straightening all the bends. His crew alongside through it all, as they pushed ahead once more, Two weeks to go they'd fought back, their deficit now at 4. Another win would setupa finale for the ages, As the leader in the standings finished fifth with broken gauges. He'd earned the right to start the main outside the pole, Tied for the poits lead with one last shot at his goal. The longest week he'd known as a driver or a fan, He focused on what brought him here, how it all began. Growing up consumed by a passion that was great, He had known from day one to drive a race car was his fate.
