Qualifying rainouts

Qualifying Rainout !

Last week I turned on the tube to watch Martinsville  qualifying & as soon as I seen the tarps on the cars I got this familiar frustrated feeling in my gut, the same one I have felt for the past two seasons when qualifying has gotten rained out.

I really can't figure out why NASCAR will measure down to a fraction of an inch to make it fair and equal for everyone, but yet do something that I feel is totally unfair when it comes to setting the field when qualifying is rained out.

The current method of setting the field according to the point standings would be fine if it only happened once or twice a season. But for the past two seasons it seems like there were times when every other weekend qualifying was getting rained out.

So to start my list of unfairness the first is that the points leader would have no where near the number of pole positions in a season if it wasn't for qualifying rainouts.

Second is that there are a number of tracks where track position is everything, starting on the pole is a definite advantage.

Third, If you have the pole odds are good that you're going to lead the first lap, thus getting 5 bonus points for leading a lap...adding to your points lead .

Fourth is pit selection, a huge advantage at most tracks.

Fifth, each time the field is set this way it works against anyone who is working their way up thru the points standing, it's like making them start at the back all the time.

What I think is fair for everyone & what  I would like to see for the top 35 drivers  is when qualifying is rained out the drivers draw for their starting position, just like in the Bud Shoot out.  This way everyone has the same chance for any starting position.
The 'go or go-homers' are the ones who really get screwed  with the current method. The ones who have limited sponsorship or equipment/resources could very well travel to a track  ¾  across the states and not even get to  turn a lap thru no fault of their own. So here is what we do for these guys.....

The field is set for the top 35 according to the position they drew.
For the 'go or go-homers' they have a 10 lap qualifying shootout just before Sundays race. They line up for the shoot out  in the same order  that they went thru tech inspection.   The order that they cross the shoot-out finish line is the order they line up behind the top 35 until the field is filled.

This way EVERY driver has an equal opportunity,  The networks get their airtime to show the draw, sponsors get advertising and as for the 10 lap go or go home qualifying shoot-out, what a bonus!! Fans would feel like they saw 2 races for the price of one and it would be 1,000 times better than seeing some retarded  'Digger'  stupid cartoon crap  Or hear some idiot announcer asking lame-ass questions over & over again like " well what do you think your odds are in winning today's race there Tony ?"... "Well I stayed up  all night Dick, I called everyone I could think of and the best odds that I could come up with for me winning are ONE IN FOURTY-THREE YOU IDIOT !!"

    So that's what I think & I'm stickin to it !!
