Post 1 The New Beast

PROLOG

It was the time before nations; the time before breeds; the time with the prey animals large enough

to feed the pack for days. It was the age of our innocence: we were Wolves.

This is the story of our origin, past down from my mother from her mother all the way from the

very First Bitch, and First Dog. One day you'll tell the same story to your litters, and they to theirs,

for all time. You see we are all canines all breeds, even the wolves who were the first of us. Only they aren't quite as smart as us domestics, especially us Chihuahuas. See we have it easy with our humans, we have food, and toys, and out pet humans to play with in comfortable homes. The wolves have to hiunt their own food, and have non of the other things. So lie still, and let Momma tell you our story.

POST I

The New Beast

“Alpha! Alpha! Alpha! There's a strange creature on our hunting ground! We must flee; we need

to get out of here. We need to leave this place now!

The Betta Wolf was panting, looking around wildly, and pacing with a growl under her breath;

as she was clearly panicked. Alpha bit her scruff, threw her to the ground, and through a deep growl

commanded her, “Calm down bitch and tell me what happened.”

When he let her go, she closed her eyes and settled herself. After what seemed like much time, she

began her tail. “I was stalking the Tree Horn Beasts when I saw a strange creature; smaller then us

but running on its hind legs. It was carrying a stick in one of it's for paws, and from five leaps away it

through that stick into the Tree Horns heart! We need to leave before this thing comes after us!

It was covered in the skin of the prey! We need to leave before it comes after us!!”

Alpha smooths his voice, visibly calming himself to reassure the pack. “Go rest Betta. Omega

go care for Betta.

Listen to me my pack, and hear my words, he addressed the others. A new and strange creature has come into our wood,

We must learn more. Stalk it, study it, watch, smell, and listen for what it does. But under no circumstance approach, or be seen by it. I must know more of this hind leg walker, before I make any decisions; are there others, will there be any reprisals. Is it more deadly then it looks, or is it something we can ignore. I need these questions answered before I go to the elder for advice. Bring me these answers by sunrise.”

Gamma, delta, and Kappa took th first scouting to find the hind leg walkers, they took the high tree horn path be the wide trees for there first lap. Delta kept sniffing at kappa's but, and about twenty leaps walk out she snapped at him. And drew blood on his ear. “Delta! What in stiff wetter are you doing?

Do you know what Alpha would do to you if he caught you sni....”

“Hush!” Commanded Gamma in a low growl. “I think we found our target.”

Indeed they did, female by the smell of it. It was doing the oddest thing; picking out small plants with it's for paws, and and putting them in a thing made of skin from long eared hoppers.

“What is that thing doing? Do they eat plants or prey?” Asked Kappa. “I'm not sure. Betta said she saw one kill a tree horn, maybe they eat both like the thunder walkers; they often stand on two feet, especially to rawer at us if we come too close. Maybe they are like them.” Gamma speculated.

“I fear not, I fear I may know why this one is taking those plants with it, instead of eating them now. It may be taking them to it's pack.” Said Delta.

“Oh how I hope you are wrong. It could be that it is taking them to it's pups; it smells female, and even like it may have just had birth recently.” Gamma ventured hopefully.

Just then a hunter bird swooped from behind the wolves after a bushy tail. Kappa yelped, and the hunter bird went off coerce. It's wing hit a tree, and to a wolfs ear she snap of bone was clear. It landed right next to the hind leg walker.

“Wow, lucky creature,” says Kappa Drooling, “to have prey land right next to you helpless.”

But the hind leg walker did the oddest thing yet. It made soothing sounds, and removed some of it's prey skins and gently tossed it over the hunter bird, then picked it up and turned to look at the wolves that distracted the hunter bird. The female hind leg walker just looked at the wolves, and raised one of it's for paws, and waved it back, and forth as if that was to mean something. It, well by now the wolves were sure it was a she, she turned and clammily walked away with the hunter bird safely in her for legs.

“What do you think it's doing with that live hunter bird Gamma?' Delta asked. “I'm not sure, it may be bringing it to it”s pups so they can learn to kill.” He responded. “I'm not so sure, maybe.” Kappa ventured. “But she is bing very gentile with it, almost like a mother with a pup.” “Don't be ridiculous Kappa, we know the hunter birds. These are not the same creatures.” Snapped Delta. “I know that. It just almost seems that the hind leg walker cares for the hunter bird. And it saw us, but stayed calm, as though it thought we just, I'm not sure, another pack on our own side of territory saying hi.”

“Yes that was strange. Alpha ordered us not to be seen, but it is good to be aware that they are not afraid of us. Lets hope they don't think us prey.” Says Gamma. “We need to stalk her to see where she goes, and what is there. Just a mate, and pups, or a pack.”

“But it saw us, we have to go back to the pack to tell Alpha.” Whined Delta.

“Alpha said we need to know if there are others. How better then to fallow this female back and see what is there?” Answered Gamma. “We shall be more careful, and no more yelping Kappa.” “Hay! The hunter bird caught me by surprise!” She whined.

They followed the hind leg walked through the trees to a clearing where the wolves found that the hind leg walker did indeed have a pack. A much larger pack then the wolves had.

In this clearing the hind leg walkers had several large bubbles made of peaced together prey skins, and in a few rings of big rocks was death light; these creatures some how made death light obey them. Over one of the rings with death light was some meat on sticks. Very strange to the wolves, but it smelled very good.

The female they followed took the hunter bird to a male who tied it's leg to a small dead tree, and started doing something to it. When the male hind leg walker moved out of the wolves way they coul'd

see that the hunter bird had long eared hopper's skin wrapped around it's wings. And it's eyes were covered up.

“Now what do you think they are doing with that hunter bird?” Delta asked of Gamma. “I hate to admit it, but I think Kappa has been wright about these hind leg walkers at every guess. They are in a pack. And they do look as if they are trying to help that hunter bird, so they may actually care about creatures not their own. Very strange. Look they are giving the hunter bird meat? This is more then we do for our own, as badly as the hunter bird was hurt. If that happened to a wolf we'd put him, or her out of their misery. What are they trying to do?”

“I don't know Gamma, but I wonder if a badly broken bone can heal in time if others feed, and care for the one injured. I always thought it might be possible, but what I don't understand is why do it for another species?” Kappa responded.

“I don't know Kappa, but we may see in time. We will surly have to keep watch on the hind leg walkers for a long time. I want you to report what we saw to Alpha when we get back, Kappa.” Said Gamma.

“But I am lowest in this group, It's not my place to approach Alpha about this stalking.” Whined Kappa. “I will explain to him what I am telling you now. These hind leg walker may be the most dangerous animals we have ever come across, including us, and even thunder walkers. But some how you seem to have an instinct about them, and an understanding that at least Delta, and I lack. So you will give Alpha the best report.” Gamma told her.

Gamma convinced Alpha quickly enough, he was eager to gain an understanding, and any insight into these potentially deadly enemies. He found Kappa's insight plausible, if any thing about these creatures could be understood. She even came up with a good possibility as to why hind keg walkers kept death light. “Well Alpha, I think that because they have so little of their own fur, they use death light to keep worm.” “That makes sense, but I am more concerned with how the make it obey them.” he replied.

“I am afraid it matters not. I don't think hind leg walkers, really are hind leg walkers, I mean the way they use their for legs, and paws, I think they may not be legs at all. I think they may have different kinds of limbs, ones made for holding stuff, better then a mouth. The hind leg walkers may just be two legged.” Ventured Kappa.

“You are probably right Kappa. But that is too confusing for most of us to understand. I always thought you to be the smartest in the pack. If only you were a better hunter you'd be Betta. But I am asking you to do something special for the pack. Kappa, I wish you to be the one who hind leg walker lead watch. You will be the one who studies them, and orders the patrols who are to watch them. In reward, next year you can have a litter; you can even choose who you want to mate. And if this lasts long enough not only will you keep the job, but the reward, allays.” “That's an unheard of reward Alpha.” “This is an unheard of threat Kappa. So what is you're answer?” “Of course Alpha, Of course.”

Through the rest of the hot time Kappa kept patrols on the hind leg walkers, and spent much time

watching them herself. She rarely hunted for herself any more, just enough to stay sharp. It was for others to bring her food, just like Alpha, and Betta.

She learned much about the hind leg walkers. Such as they cared for their old, and sick who could no longer help much. She also found that their pups did not grow very fast, and yet they had such tall pups in the same pack also growing so slow they hardly seemed any bigger at all by the time the rainy time came. This made her come up with the conclusion the hind leg walkers aged slowly, and may live longer then wolves. She kept that thought to herself for the time.

The hind leg walkers seemed to often find the wolves, but neither feared not threatened them. Even odder was that if the hind leg walker saw the wolves when they were eating meat they did not get territorial over their food. In fact the hind leg walkers would too their tasty bones to the wolves after they finished most of the meat.

The wolves were beginning to stop being afraid of the hind leg walkers, and that made Alpha nervous. The hind leg walkers were still way to powerful, and if they should choose to prey on the wolves, the wolves fear may be their best weapon for escape.

However Kappa was less sure she began to wonder if it were possible for a new kind of cross species relationship to be born out of this meeting with the hind leg walkers.

“So is that what happened Momma, is it, is it? Did the pack become dogs Momma, did they, did they?' “Ya Momma, did they, haw haw?” “Now now pups, settle down. Thats enough for today. I'll tell you more tomorrow night.” “Ow Momma, you said you were going to tell us how we come dogs.” “Of course, but a journey like that took a long time; I cant tell the whole of it in one night, Now go to sleep and dream of Kappa, and Alpha and the hind leg walkers. Good night.”
