LAS VEGAS
Panasonic on Sunday said it has developed a system for transmitting high-definition video from a video player, set-top box or video game console without using a cable.
Developed in partnership with SiBEAM Inc., the wireless technology allows gives consumers greater freedom in placing their television and video devices, without having to deal with unsightly cables, Panasonic said.
The technology, announced ahead of this week's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is based on the WirelessHD standard developed by a consortium that includes Sony Corp., Toshiba Corp., and Panasonic's parent, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.
Wireless streaming of high-definition video is something consumers have been awaiting for years. Products promised by several major electronics manufacturers failed to materialize.
At CES, LG Electronics Inc. of Korea is expected to demonstrate technology that transmits video over standard Wi-Fi. Another company, Pulse-Link Inc., is pushing another technology called ultra wideband. But both of those technologies are slower than WirelessHD, and require some compression. Panasonic's system doesn't.
Panasonic did not say in a press release when its system would become available.
