LEVI, Finland -- Andre Myhrer of Sweden had a perfect start to his defence of the World Cup slalom title, winning the seasons first race in the discipline on Sunday after narrowly holding off defending overall champion Marcel Hirscher of Austria in a close second run. Myhrer, a 2010 Vancouver Olympics bronze medallist , earned the fifth World Cup slalom victory of his career, but said he was still nervous going out last after seeing Hirscher put down a good time. "This level is so high so if you take it easy just a little bit youre behind," he said. "Its not easy to be alone up there ... knowing that everybody is down (already) and its just you left. But Ive proved that I can manage that." Hirscher trailed by 0.27 seconds after the first run and had the second fastest time of all skiers in the afternoon as well. "Im happy, really happy at the moment," Hirscher said. "And six hundreds of a second is really nothing." Jens Byggmark, also of Sweden, was 0.61 seconds behind in third for his first World Cup podium finish in four years. Byggmark burst onto the scene unexpectedly by winning back-to-back slaloms in Kitzbuehel in 2007 but has not won a major race since. He took silver at the world championships last year, and showed again on Sunday that he can still challenge for victories. "Ive been working really hard to be more stable and I think Ive reached my goal," the 27-year-old Byggmark said, adding that he needs to "keep this level and to be on the podium for the whole season." The Swedes have a new coach this season, former Alpine skier Johan Brolenius, whose training tactics have helped lift the team, Byggmark said. "We have a good pace (in) training and were fighting, were fighting hard, and were helping each other." American Ted Ligety, who won the opening giant slalom World Cup race in Soelden by the biggest winning margin since 1979, finished in a tie for 13th place, 1.65 seconds behind Myhrer. Ligety is now third on the overall leaderboard. Hirscher is currently in the lead with 140 points and Italys Manfred Moelgg is trailing a close second. Levi -- about 105 miles north of the Arctic Circle -- is the worlds northernmost World Cup venue. Last year, the scheduled circuit races were cancelled here because of a lack of snow. The next mens World Cup races are in downhill and super G in Lake Louise, Canada, on Nov. 24-25. Ernie Stautner Womens Jersey . Ottawa has also promised to keep its funding for Olympic sport intact, he said. "This money ... coming from the (federal) government, . . . plus the $100 million, will guarantee a bright and golden future for Canadian Olympic athletes," he said on a conference call that included presidents of some of the national sports federations. http://www.teamshoppittsburghsteelers.com/emmanuel-sanders-jersey . BERLIN -- Stuttgart earned a hard-fought 1-0 win at Hamburger SV to end the home sides four-game unbeaten run on Sunday. Vedad Ibisevics 31st-minute strike was enough for the visitors to claim just their second win of the season and stem talk of a crisis engulfing the club. Martin Harnik crossed for the Bosnian striker to steal ahead of his marker and convert at the near post past goalkeeper Rene Adler. "You couldnt see that we had collected 10 points from the previous four games," Hamburg captain Heiko Westermann said. Adler had made a great block to deny Harnik in the second minute, and Ibisevic had another chance in the 15th but fired wide under pressure from a defender. "The win does us a lot of good," said Stuttgart coach Bruno Labbadia, who used to be in charge of Hamburg. "It was a sensational performance today." The home sides first big chance fell to Dutchman Raphael van der Vaart in the 43rd but Arthur Boka made a crucial intervention. Boka hobbled off injured as a result, and there was still time before the break for Artjoms Rudnevs effort to be ruled offside after Milan Badeljs initial 30-meter (yard) strike hit the crossbar. Either side could have scored after the interval. Hamburg defender Dennis Diekmeier dispossessed Ibrahima Traore in the penalty area, before the outstanding Sven Ulreich made saves from Maximilian Beister, Van der Vaart and Rudnevs. Son Heung-min then wasted the next chance from a rebound. Adler kept the resullt in doubt until the end with another save from Harnik. L.C. Greenwood Womens Jersey. "We said before the game that they were a good team, even if they were low down (in the standings)," said Van der Vaart, who wasnt at his best after returning from international duty with a thigh strain. Earlier Sunday, Nuremberg ended its four-game losing streak with a 0-0 draw at home to Augsburg. Augsburg came closest to scoring in a keenly contested game of little quality, and the final whistle was greeted by whistles from the Nuremberg fans who have not seen their side win at home since April. "At least we stopped the bad run somewhat," said Nuremberg goalkeeper Raphael Schaefer, who went off at the interval with an Achilles problem. "Of course it wasnt a good game. You can see how insecure the team is at the moment." Knowledge Musona had the games first shot on target in the 30th minute, straight at Schaefer, and Nuremberg defender Hanno Balitsch had a half-chance at the other end but failed to connect properly with the ball before the break. Substitute keeper Patrick Rakovsky almost gifted Augsburg the opener by failing to claim a corner, with Aristide Bance, Thomas Oehrl and then Ragnar Klavan all having attempts blocked before he finally gathered the ball. Rakovsky then denied Bance in the 67th. "If you score goals you can also win such a game," said Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl. "So (at least) we can be happy we took the point." ' ' '
