Why are So Many Teens Dining at the Y?

I was asked recently why I thought so may young ladies, let's say 14-21 years of age are becoming Lesbians or Bisexuals? First of all the numbers have not changed that much, what has changed is that they guilt and shame that once forced tham to hide is beginning to go away. Some of it is a result of a new permissiveness in our community, and the stigma has been a little less severe for Lesbian and Bisexual women than for Gay or Bi men. Some is a fad and some is curiousity, but mostly it's a slightly misdirected form of bonding. We don't teach teen girls how to be successful friends and allies so some jump to that next level. About 1/2 of the "Baby Dykes" and "Baby Bi's" are not in it for the long haul, for the rest, they are just finding out who they really are.
