As part of TSNs countdown to the 2012 NHL Draft, TSN.ca is providing reports for all seven Canadian teams going into the big event on June 22. Our coverage continues with the Toronto Maple Leafs. General Manager: Brian Burke Top Draft Position: No. 5 Overall Recent First Round Picks: RW Tyler Biggs (2011), D Stuart Percy (2011), C Nazem Kadri (2009), D Luke Schenn (2008), C Jiri Tlusty (2006), G Tuukka Rask (2005). Overview: While some fans are still lamenting the blown chance of having Tyler Seguin and Dougie Hamilton, the Toronto Maple Leafs are marching forward with a solid youth movement and no regrets. Led by Joe Colborne, Nazem Kadri and Ben Scrivens, the Toronto Marlies were one of the best teams in the American Hockey League this past season and their development only got better with a run to the Calder Cup Final. Also rising on the depth chart are 2011 first-round picks Tyler Biggs and Stuart Percy, along with 2010 draft pick and Memorial Cup finalist Greg KcKegg. And with the fifth overall selection in the draft, the Maple Leafs are in line to take a potential impact player. And the word potential can be scratched off if GM Brian Burke is able to move up in the order and land Nail Yakupov. Short Term Needs: Considering the style Burke and head coach Randy Carlyle want to play, size and toughness will likely be ingredients looked for in any potential pick. The club is also shopping for immediate help in the crease and that will likely come through a trade, especially with Scrivens playing so wellin the AHL playoffs. Its also worth noting that five of Torontos seven active-roster defenceman are under contract through 2014, while only three forwards (Mikhail Grabovski, Phil Kessel and Mike Brown) are locked up beyond next season. Long Term Needs: Torontos first long-term need is at centre, where the franchise has long sought a playmaker with size. A shutdown defenceman to take the pressure off captain Dion Phaneuf, who led the team in playing time, is also likely on the wish list. Prospect Watch From Scott Cullen: It seems like the Leafs have been waiting a long time on Kadri, since he was drafted seventh overall in 2009 and he has 19 points in 51 NHL games since. However, with 81 points in 92 games at the AHL level, 21-year-old Kadri is due for a long look in the NHL, where he should get a chance to sink or swim as a scoring forward. Lanky pivot Joe Colborne started the year great, scoring a point-per-game for his first 24 games, but he faded as the season went along, finishing with two points in his last 15 games and not scoring a goal in 24 games after February 17. He didnt look out of place in 10 games with the Maple Leafs, contributing a goal and five points, but he should be more productive at the AHL level before hes asked to handle offensive responsibility in the NHL. Jesse Blacker is a feisty puck-moving defenceman, who can skate and may not be too far away from challenging for a spot with the Maple Leafs. He could use another year of seasoning in the AHL, handling more responsibility, but the 21-year-old shows promise. A first-round pick last summer, Stuart Percy is a heady defender who makes a good first passm, but also missed nearly half of last season with a knee injury and then a concussion, so he could use a full year of dominating OHL competition before he starts down the pro path. Acquired from Tampa Bay in a deal that sent Keith Aulie to the Lightning, Carter Ashton started the season ablaze (11 goals, five assists in his first 13 games) but, like Colborne, his production faded. Ashton was also scoreless, with a minus-10 rating, in 15 games with the Leafs, so while he may have power forward potential, the 21-year-old needs more seasoning before he gets another shot. Greg McKegg toiled for half the season with an overmatched Erie Otters team, resulting in a minus-39 rating in his first 35 games, but he has shown in previous years and did with London after a midseason deal that he can put the puck in the net. His offence is his calling card, but will need time in the AHL to round out his game before hes ready to compete for an NHL job. Drafted in the first round last summer, Tyler Biggs is a powerfully-built winger who has yet to show much offensively. The 19-year-old has left college and should have an opportunity to play an offensive role with Oshawa in the Ontario Hockey League next season. Brad Ross has been a disturber of some renown in the Western Hockey League, compiling 537 penalty minutes in the last three seasons, but hes also skilled enough to contribute offensively. He may not be a scorer in the NHL, but could be an agitating third liner who can chip in a few goals from time to time. 24-year-old German blueliner Korbinian Holzer has finished two seasons of development in the AHL and could be knocking on the door for a spot with the Maple Leafs. Hes strong, steady and plays a no-frills game. Goaltender Ben Scrivens will be 26 by the time next season starts, so hes closing in on his prime years sooner than some other prospects, but hes been fantastic in the AHL (.926 SV%) and if the Leafs didnt struggle with a relatively inexperienced tandem last season, it would be conceivable that Scrivens might get a shot with next years team. As it is, however, he still looks like the number three option in the crease. To their credit, the Maple Leafs have a deeper crop of prospects than they have previously, so even beyond the Top 10, players like RW Jerry DAmigo, LW Nicolas Deschamps, C Spencer Abbott, LW Marcel Mueller and G Mark Owuya may have opportunities to challenge for jobs in the future.
