The Rose

I reached out to touch a rose today,
Growing so beautifully, so passionate
As my hand grasped the stem
I pulled suddenly away with pain
I had closed my hand not thinking
On the thorns that grew from the stems.
As I looked at the drop of blood on my finger
The pain still fresh in my mind
I couldn't help desire to
Reach back and pick the rose
Knowing what happened once could happen again.
It was at that moment
Deep in my heart and soul
It made sense to me
I now understood why God created the Rose
And why it was a symbol of Love
So powerful was my discovery that
I felt it burn in my heart.
When you look at the Rose what do you see?
You see a flower so powerfully beautiful
The color so deep red as that of the blood from my finger
The petals as soft as flesh itself
So wanting to be held and kissed
And let's not forget the scent
So intoxicating one can ever get enough
Yes the Rose is beautiful.
But least we forget... the thorns
They are all around the Rose
Along with it's leaves
It is safely protected.
In order to enjoy the treasures of the Rose
One must take the chance of being hurt
Not only from the thorns but possibly
From one of nature's Bees that also treasure the Rose.
I sat back knowing now this too was Love
So rare in life do we find that one perfect Rose.
The one we must hold and treasure
If only once in our lifetime
A love so intoxicating we never get enough
With beauty and passion never before seen.
But this love is not without risks.
As with the thorns protecting the Rose
Love is protected as well
And every time you reach for the perfect Love
You risk the possibility of pain.
So now I understood and it all made sense.
Love and the Rose are one in the same
They both offer us so much that we can't resist them
They both also expose us to the risk of pain
But I know this
There is no perfect Rose without thorns
And no perfect Love without pain...?

The Cross

The young man was at the end of his rope. Seeing no way out, he dropped to his knees in prayer. "Lord, I can't go on," he said. "I have too heavy a cross to bear." The Lord replied, "My son, if you can't bear its weight, just place your cross inside this room. Then, open that other door and pick out any cross you wish. The man was filled with relief. "Thank you Lord," he sighed, and he did as he was told. Upon entering the other door, he saw many crosses, some so large the tops were not visible. Then he spotted a tiny cross leaning against a far wall. "I'd like that one, Lord." he whispered. And the Lord replied, "My son, that is the cross you just brought in." When life's problems seem overwhelming, it helps to look around and see what other people are coping with. You may consider yourself far more fortunate than you imagined. Whatever your cross, whatever your pain, there will always be sunshine after the rain. Perhaps you may stumble, perhaps even fall, but God's always there to help you through it all.
