Living in the past??

The events over this past week have really made me think, as a country are we still dwelling in the past? I'm a firm believer in you treat someone how they treat you, you get what you give, and if something bad happens to you it happened for a true reason. I was never raised to value someone based upon the color of their skin, rather how they treat you and others. This week has really made me question the values that many Americans have in regards to race.

About a week ago I got a call from my son's 4th grade teacher in regards to a little girl claiming my son said he was going to bring a gun to school. The teacher said she didn't think this little girl was telling the truth, but still had to report it as the girls mother is the one who called her about it. The mother wanted to have a meeting with me, okay fine I agreed because it was best to let this mother know that I don't even have a toy gun in my home let alone a real one. When I questioned my son about this and about the little girl never did her race come up, so for all I knew she was snow white like myself. Tuesday was the meeting. The first words out of the little girls mothers mouth was "I just want to make sure this wasn't racially motivated"...REALLY??? Now my son is biracial(white/asian) my sisters children are biracial(white/black), never in a million years would I or my sister assume something happened to them like this solely because of their race(well of course unless racial slurs were thrown around but in this case they weren't). I was heated and completely appalled by the fact that this woman didn't know me from a can of paint, and didn't have a valid reason to assume this situation had anything to do with race, yet there she went pulling the race card. Of course I pulled it right back and went on a tangent about how it really saddens me that people are so fast to assume that because I am white I am that close minded individual who would instill hate for another race into my children. Apparently to people who aren't white, white automatically equals racist???

That evening I came home and was still heated about the situation, so I called my sister to vent. Yep the same sister who has 3 biracial children. She agrees it's bullshit, total and complete bullshit. Had the situation happened and the little girl was white and not black would we have had to have had a meeting? Most likely not. It also bothers me that while I didn't even think to ask the race of the little girl to my son(and he never thought to tell me) apparently this mother asked her daughter which is how she was so fast to jump on the 'IT HAS TO BE RACISM' bandwaggon.

To me I honestly feel this is a form of racism, just because I'm white it was assumed I'd let my children do something to someone because they're not white...really...wtf? Days later and I guess I'm still fuming.

While I'm on this tangent, lets address some other things. Not that I think these particular groups are bad, but some people use them as a safety net for when they fail. The NAACP...really what's the need for it now? This isn't the 60's where everything is segregated. Yes we still have some white racist pricks floating around, but in the same respect isn't a group dedicated to helping those who happen to be black also a form of racism? What if we had NAAWP, people would be running all over claiming how white people are so wrong for having their own group. As humans we should all be appalled by this. Racism is still around be cause we allow it to be around. We have Miss Black Teen pagents, affirmative action, etc. WHY???? Why should someone be passed up on a job because a company has to have a set amount of a particular race employed? What if a Latino man has better qualifications then a Black man but the company needs to hire a black man due to affirmative action...how is that fair to that Latino man who did what he could to better his life?

In a sense it's reverse racism, and damn it it's not right! We ALL bleed red, all breathe oxygen, all need water to survive. We are all equal, yet so divided at the same time.

In my perfect world my children would never have to hear the N word, or ask me what a wetback is, or ask why did the older black kids at school tell the younger ones to 'stay away from whitey'...in a perfect world we would all exist in , embrace the differences in each other, and race would no longer play a role. I pray my children get to witness this one day...
