A Night After The Show I was laying on the hood of my car after the concert listening to the music coming from the busses across the way. I keep my eyes closed to make it easier to concentrate on the throbbing beats flowing through the chilled night air. Keeping my arms crossed I tried to keep in as much warmth as I could, and wearing just a sweatshirt didn’t seem to provide the protection I thought it would when I packed it the night before. From the distance I hear a noise, different from the music, slowly getting closer. I keep my eyes closed thinking that it was just a late spectator soon to pass me by. I notice that whatever it was didn’t seem to be veering from my direction. I slightly open one eye to view someone coming up on a bike, but then close my eye again trying to get back into the distant tunes. Unexpectedly I hear a strangely familiar voice from beside me ask, “So, what are you doing out here in the dark by yourself? Aren’t you worried that you might get hurt out here by yourself?” Without opening my eyes I reply, “My battery died.” Opening my eyes slightly, I look over at the one standing at my side, “I already called my mom, but I told her that since it was so late just to call my brothers in the morning. Not to mention we live about two and a half hours away.” I notice David standing astride his bicycle and I ask, “So what are you doing out here this late?” “I noticed a car and some movement out here and thought I would see if there was anything wrong.” He answered with a comforting smile. “Thank you, you’re real sweet. You can have a seat on the hood if you want.” I offer. He climbs off his bike, putting the kickstand down, and then leans on the end of the hood of the car. “You can come over there and hang out with us if you want.” “I’m usually not much into crowds. Would you mind if we sit here for a little bit before we go?” I ask. “Sure. I’m not big into over crowded parties myself.” He confesses. “I know you’ve got to be cold out here, you’ve been sitting here for a while.” “A little, but I was enjoying listening to the music. Plus it’s kind of nice spending time away from my mom. I love her and all, but it just gets old being there with her all the time with hardly ever going anywhere.” “I can understand that.” I think for a moment, and then slowly a sly smile creeps across my face, “Do you ever get the mail that is sent to that fan-mail address?” “Yea, I pick it up every chance I get.” I feel myself begin to blush a little, “Umm, so you got that short story I wrote then. The ‘Daydream’ one.” “You were the one that wrote that?” He asks with a surprised look on his face. “Yea. Kind of corny to send something like that, hu?” Slightly laughing, he said. “No. I though it was really good. Made me want to take a cold shower.” “Thanks.” I say looking at him with a smile on my face. Feeling a little nervous I confessed, “Yea, I’m ‘T’. The one on the TDO board, also known as ‘TLD Smith.” “I remember seeing you on there. You’re the one that told me about your husband, aren’t you?” “Yea, that was me.” I answer as my smile fades a little. “Did you get the shot glass checker set I sent you?” I ask hoping it would change the subject. With a slight laugh he answers, “Yea, and Mike really liked it too. He collects shot glasses.” “I kind of figured he would. I thought of that after I had already sent it.” I sit up hoping to get more comfortable, “I was going to send you homemade candy, but I though that would be a better gift.” “I like it. It’s really cool.” “I guess we better go on over there before they send out a search party for you.” I suggest. “They probably wouldn’t even notice. They are all over there drinking, but it would probably be warmer then out here.” “Probably. Just let me lock up my car.” I tell him as I climb off the car. “I’ll probably play hell getting back in, though.” “Why?” “Because the locks are messed up. I have to get in through the passenger side. That’s if it hasn’t messed up too. It’s been a while since I’ve locked it.” “Then leave it. I don’t think anyone will mess with it.”
