So this monday I turn....41.
Yikes.
The ironic thing is I really don't feel 40 or rather 41.
Yes I have aches and pains and all those things that I
guess are associated with being "older" but....
My mentality (or lack there of) is that of someone much younger.
For example, I like "younger" forms of music, I still am in my " rebellious stage...
20 + years and going", I like collecting toys (circuit bent, star wars, etc, etc, etc), watching dopey comedies and cartoons.....
I guess the song holds true....
Fairy tales can come true
It can happen to you
If you're young at heart or it's hard, you will find,
To be narrow of mind
If you’re young at heart
You can go to extremes
With impossible schemes
You can laugh when your dreams
Fall apart at the seams
And life becomes exciting with each passing day,
And love is either in your heart… or on its way.
Don't you know that it's worth
Every treasure on earth
To be young at heart?
For, as rich as you are,
It's much better by far
To be young at heart
And, if you should survive
To a hundred and five,
Look at all you'll derive
Just by being alive!
Now, here is the best part:
You have a head start
If you are amongst the very young...
At heart
And, if you should survive
To a hundred and five
Look at all you’ll derive
Just by being alive!
Now, here is the best part:
You have a head start
If you are amongst the very young...
At heart....

Talking about "old" songs, last night i was on youtube (as I'm prone to do from time to time)...and listened to Al Jolson's version of "Brother can you spare a dime"?
Then I listened to Mandy Patakins' version...wow. Both made me teary eyed.
They used to tell me I was building a dream
And so I followed the mob
When their was earth to plow or guns to bear
I was always their right on the job
They used to tell me I was building a dream
With peace and glory ahead
Why should I be standing in line
Just waiting for bread?
Once I built a railroad, I made it run
Made it race against time
Once I built a railroad, now it's done
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once I built a tower up to the sun
Brick and rivet and lime
Once I built a tower, now it's done
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell
Full of that Yankee-Doodly-dum
Half a million boots went sloggin' through Hell
And I was the kid with the drum
Say, don't you remember, they called me "Al"
It was "Al" all the time
Why don't you remember, I'm your pal
Say buddy, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, ah gee we looked swell
Full of that Yankee-Doodly-dum
Half a million boots went sloggin' through Hell
And I was the kid with the drum
Oh, say, don't you remember, they called me "Al"
It was "Al" all the time
Say, don't you remember, I'm your pal
Buddy, can you spare a dime?
Think about it...that song was popular during the Great Depression in the 30's.
And now? I think we're in one.
When I see white collar guys applying for minimum wage jobs and get turned away,
when I turn on the news and read about massive layoff's , when I see people's homes forclosed, when I read about animals left in those forementioned homes (or on the street) to fend for themselves, when I read about massive unemployment (and how states are broke paying out U.E. benefits), well... Brother can you spare a dime?
So read the lyrics, I mean really read them. It's about the blood and sweat of Americans. The guys who built things, railroads, building, fought for this country, the office worker, the person who mops up aisle 4, and now they're fucked. But hey, as long as the CEO's get the big $, the bonuses, the jet's, the movie stars make more than some small towns (for one movie), athletes make the GDP of some countries, and people are more concerned with Paris Hilton and American Idol....all to keep us regular folks star struck and stupid (and our eyes off the real issues)...Brother can you spare a dime?????
