COCA COLA

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plumbing the pages of Cokelore By Rich Maloof for MSN Health & Fitness Find More Weight Loss Can Control Hypertension Fried Food Compounds May Harm Heart More Diet & Fitness Articles Coca-Cola is acidic, but it’s not battery acid. Coke contains citric acid (naturally occurring in fruits like lemons and limes) and phosphoric acid (found in everything from milk to fish), but in low enough concentration that the soda can’t eat a hole through your stomach lining on its own. Left in a cup overnight, Coke does not have the acidity to dissolve a penny, a nail or even a housefly. Think about it: Coke is stored and shipped in thin aluminum cans and soft plastic bottles, and they don’t seem to be gushing open on grocery-store shelves. Yes, fer cryin’ out loud—Coke used to contain cocaine. When Coca-Cola was first sold in 1885, it was marketed as a medicinal tonic. It was held at the time that the extract of coca leaves, kola nuts, and carbonated water were “stimulating” and good for you. But cocaine had a bad name by the turn of the 20th century. The amount of coca-leaf extract was diminished until the formula was completely stripped of narcotic traces in 1929 (per Frederick Allen’s company history, Secret Formula). The current recipe for Coca-Cola remains a guarded secret to which only two Coke executives reportedly have access. But we do know it contains the most popular drug in the world, caffeine. Coke is no good for GERD. If you’re drinking “the real thing” to relieve your acid reflux, think again. “Any liquid can momentarily provide some relief to reflux by essentially rinsing the esophogeal tissues and causing a clearance,” says Dr. Anthony Starpoli, who is on staff at two New York City hospitals as director of gastroesophageal reflux and endosurgery. “But if you look at the components of Coca-Cola, you first have the high acidic content—one of the highest contents of any food or drink. Then you’ve got the caffeine content, and caffeine will promote acid secretion. Then you’ve got the carbonation, which promotes reflux.” Dr. Felice Schnoll-Sussman of New York Presbyterian Hospital further explains that the upper gastrointestinal tract can only manage so many acidic irritants before reflux trouble begins. “Everybody refluxes about seven times a day—that’s normal, and the esophagus is equipped to handle that number of reflux episodes,” she says. “When there are additional episodes due to lifestyle choices [e.g., smoking] or things we consume, the barrier of the esophagus gets irritated. It can no longer clear the acid, and the esophageal lining starts to break down.” Sodas are usually on the “do not consume” list for people suffering heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease. Nor is there scientific support that drinking flat soda relieves nausea, though the ginger in ginger ale may provide some relief. Coke explosions are not killers. By now everybody knows that little Mikey from the Life cereal commercials of the ’70s didn’t explode after mixing Pop Rocks candy and Coca-Cola. In fact, childhood actor John Gilchrist is still alive and well and explosion-free. The rumor was updated in 2006 with unsubstantiated reports that two children from Brazil had died after mixing Mentos and Coke. Drop a Mentos candy in a bottle of Coke—or better yet, Diet Coke—and it will, in fact, erupt in a fizzy geyser, as documented by any number of Web videos. The candy’s outer shell is pitted with countless, tiny craters, each of them a “nucleation site” where carbon dioxide molecules from the soda change to gas and then rapidly escape. Anyone who mixes Mentos and Coke in the mouth can expect a hilariously foamy face — or, if forced down the throat, a painful case of diarrhea. Fun! The over-imbibing of Coca-Cola, like all soda pop, is contributing to our nation’s obesity rate. Coke dispensers and junk-food vending machines are being yanked out of our nation’s schools after coming under fire from health advocates, concerned parents, and Bill Clinton. In response, the Coca-Cola Co. has made efforts to join the health education fray, even if their flagship products do make you fat. The intuitively named makeeverydropcount.com has info about hydration, sweetener basics and weight management, all points that are driven home at their more scientific Beverage Institute for Health & Wellness. They’ve also introduced a “healthy soda” in Diet Coke Plus, which contains nutrients. Of course, a can of Coca-Cola isn’t going to jump out of the cooler and make you obese, give you diabetes, or rot your molars all on its own. So have a Coke and a smile. But stick to an occasional, small serving so that smile still shows some teeth. Confused by health myths and misinformation? You need a Reality Check. What is the matter with the human race..People just don't give a fuck anymore, even when they themselves had made the arrangemnets..I give up..I just feel used and abused..not a phone call or nothing, just dont turn up,,and the next time you make contact, the person starts off by saying, " Ohhh!!, Where were you? "..Bloody hell,!! is that a friend, or what ? or is it someone who just goes out of their way to pretend to be one..Not genuine..
