A Soldier's Thoughts

In the sand our home has been made I wonder how long we will be here Fighting in a land so far from home As sounds of war is all that I now hear I see those saying we should not go My own beliefs I bury deep down inside Only one thought stands out for me now I will defend my country with pride A bullet cuts the still air overhead A round explodes somewhere in the sand Of right or wrong I now do not think With honor beside fellow heroes I stand Bombs are falling on the cities out front Innocent people I know each day will die With somber thoughts each day of this war For these and others I hang my head and cry Children taken way before their time Unable to live to enjoy life like me and you A mother, father, sister and brother now dead War’s reality brings to us a sobering view I hear of the pain that ones feel inside Protesting why we were all sent here In freedom their opinion they may voice Only support for all of us do we want to hear I see a fellow soldier call out in pain A round has opened a wound so wide Another soldier defending his country On this cold desert night has died No praise do we seek for all that is done Regrets many, we all will from this day know The support from our country in these times Is all that we truly want you to show Another round lands so near by me here Protection is what I now will seek Somewhere in this unfortunate war we fight With pride in our country these words I speak So don’t feel sorry for me that I am here Stand proud moms, dads, family and friends all As with the support that you give to us We will forever stand proud and tall © Tall Mountain Dreamer

A soldier's Letter

Dear Mom and Dad the heading reads The date sits idly off to the side The postmark is smudged from all the handling The letter is held in trembling hands, opened wide I miss the all the things that we had each day The days here are long and stress does run high The sun beats down on us relentlessly As I sit here under this smoke filled sky I can smell the stench of burning flesh from a fight Heroes gave their lives in a valiant cause I am writing this in between tears for my comrades I shed For a second the war has come to a pause Mom I miss the meals that each day you would make The ones filled with love and tasted so good I miss that smile and watching you as you worked Making time for us all, whenever you could Dad I miss the words that you gave to me to learn Trying to follow in the footsteps of a great man like you Seeing how you treated all that you happened to meet The respect that each would always give to you I miss the family and special times we shared The holidays as they passed thru the year The holidays still pass me as this war drags on But all my gifts and well wishes are caution and fear Now tears I will bring to ach of you I know This will pain me with the sorrow that I will bring to you For this letter was mailed by a friend so dear Because my life as I knew it is now through I live now with the Lord, sleeping in heaven’s bed so soft Angels are now my company each day Many brave heroes around me I see Those who gave their lives so free others can stay I will end this letter now as darkness has fallen My heart weeps for the pain that you now know I smile over you and know in your hearts I will always be The memories we have had with your love will flow Oh yes! One last thing PS: I love you © Tall Mountain Dreamer
In a land so far from home A lonely soldier kneels to pray I stand and watch with tear filled eyes To his words that flow today "Dear God I know you are listening These thoughts I now send to you I have always carried you in my heart Hard times you have always led me through I know that I am one of many That of your precious time do ask So I will make this short and sweet So you can go on about your task In this land so far from home My country's honor I proudly protect Each day I do all I am tasked My duties none do I ever neglect I think of my family way back home My wife and children so dear Wishing them the happiness Christmas brings A holiday filled with good will and cheer In my memories I see their precious smiles Time with them I will be able to spend this way Let them know I love them all so much And for their protection I do now pray For my fellow soldiers I ask of you To keep them safe from any and all harm Let them lay their heads down to sleep In a world filled with peace and calm No wars do we want to fight you know We want to live in a world of true peace But when others lives are truly threatened Their suffering we will proudly release I know many bullets will be fired in anger Many lives will surely be needlessly lost The pain and suffering brought on by war Many innocent people will pay a high cost To my parents that raised me with love And taught me to stand proud and strong Bring them comfort in their thoughts Tell them we will be together before long Now I close this special Christmas prayer This one I send to you this very night So you can go and give your strength To others who are in greater plight I would like to thank you for the time That to me you willingly in silence gave And I know deep in my precious heart That my soul you will always save, Amen" I watched now through tear filled eyes As this soldier once again did stand Reaching out to his family's picture Picking it up in his trembling hand To his lips he brought it slowly In soft words he said, "You I all miss" Then up to his trembling lips I watched as he gave it a kiss Then he laid down on his bed of sand Reached and turned out the dim light Closing his eyes he faded to sleep Somewhere in the world this Christmas night ©Tall Mountain Dreamer
