The rain came pouring suddenly last night
Before the drooping land was quite aware.
I felt the quickening of the earth’s delight;
I heard excited whispering on the air
As withered blade and listless flower and tree
Reached forth to drink its fill of ecstasy.
I rose today to greet the usual dawn
And found the scene transformed before my
Eyes
For though the wild, impulsive rain had gone,
It left the lingering thrill of surprise.
The earth lay quivering in a rosy light,
Remembering the kisses it had last night.
