i think it is an excellent idea also to prove yuor skill,therefore one advice;even in capitol area we hardly speak nor understand english ,there arent many that does,and altho signs are in english also they do not provide much info,so maybe make freinds first in city before going into remote areaxx
yes up north is pretty,kyoto is a must visit also,japan is small so i suppose start from tokyo then travel around,i am visiting over there this winter so we are going to miss each other lol hope you have a blast x
