Rhode Island needs inmates like Paris Hilton and jailers like the Los Angeles County sheriff to help with its overcrowding problem.

As you've undoubtedly heard, party girl Hilton was able to slip out of a jail sentence after only a few days because of an unspecified medical condition. According to various reports, she spent much of her three days in jail crying. She also wouldn't eat or sleep and developed a rash.

Hey, you'd cry and develop a rash, too, if you were a 26-year-old heiress who had to wear those non-designer prison duds.

Like a parent giving in to a bratty child, the sheriff buckled and decided to let Hilton complete her 45-day sentence at her luxury West Hollywood home. Give the sheriff some credit; many parents give in to tantrums after a few hours or even minutes. This guy held out for three days.

Meanwhile, you might have heard that Rhode Island has a budget problem and an overcrowded prison.

Governor Carcieri had hoped to save $4 million by reducing the number of inmates inside the state's Adult Correctional Institutions by 500. This budget issue is serious stuff. A lot of 50-something retirees in Florida are counting on those state pension checks.

Unfortunately, Carcieri's prison plan failed. Nobody could figure out a reasonable way to let out more prisoners. Now the governor is proposing the laying off of 1,000 state workers.

The inmates at the ACI apparently aren't as helpful as Hilton. They must be acting like respectable, hardened prisoners. If they would only pout and cry enough to keep their fellow inmates awake at night, somebody might decide to show them the door early.

( If Buddy Cianci had tried Paris's get out of jail card, he might already be back on the radio -- if not in office.)

It's been said that you won't last in prison unless you put on a tough facade. And didn't Hilton just prove that.

Of course, a judge could change all that. The sentencing judge has called Hilton into court today to determine if she really deserved to be let out of prison.

Soon we'll see just how well he can deal with spoiled kids.
