MONDAY 14TH MAY 8AM MADDIE'S PARENTS MAKE A STATEMENT TO THE PRESS AND PUBLIC
'We Have To Believe Madeleine Is Safe'
Madeleine McCann's parents have said they have to cling to the hope that their daughter is still alive. In a brief news conference this morning Gerry McCann told Sky News presenter Jeremy Thompson: "We've had excellent support to help us look forward and to channel everything into looking forwards. "Until we have concrete evidence to the contrary, we have to believe Madeleine is safe and well and being looked after." He added that the couple had taken "tremendous support" from the "warmth and spiritual outpouring" from all around the world. Kate McCann made it clear that they had no plans to return to the UK at the moment. Gerry confirmed that they have their own lawyers with them to relieve them of the burden of working out how best to use the offers of financial support to help in the search. "This has allowed us to concentrate on our own physical and mental wellbeing and that of our family," he said. Portuguese police searching for Madeleine have admitted they have no suspects - and not a single lead in the case. More than ten days after the four-year-old was kidnapped in the Algarve, the detective leading the search has said he has no idea where she is. It is another blow for Madeleine's parents, who have pledged to stay in Portugal until their daughter is found. On Saturday, Madeleine's birthday, Mr McCann reaffirmed his belief his daughter was still alive
FIGHTING FUND
A "fighting fund" to which members of the public can donate to help in the search for missing Madeleine McCann is being set up by her family's lawyers. The legal team, which has flown out to Portugal, will reveal details of the fund within the next few days. The lawyers will help with liaison and will not interfere with the inquiry, Madeleine's uncle John McCann has said. Rewards of £2.5m have been offered to anyone with information leading to the four-year-old's safe return. Madeleine, from Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared from an apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz on 3 May. A spokesman for the International Family Law Group, the legal company helping the McCanns, said: "Gerry and Kate are very grateful for all the support and generous offers of help that they are receiving. "Details of how contributions can be made to help get Madeleine back to the safety of her own family will be made available in the next couple of days." The international number for Crime stoppers is +44 1883 731 336. People with information about Madeleine can call anonymously.

No end to Madeleine family agony
The parents of Madeleine McCann are spending a second weekend without their daughter, who disappeared from a Portuguese holiday apartment on 3 May. Prayers will be said for Madeleine at a church service in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz later. On Saturday, Gerry McCann paid an emotional tribute to his daughter as the family marked her fourth birthday. No suspects in the abduction case have been named, but witnesses may being making formal statements on Monday. Rewards totalling £2.5m have been offered to anyone who can help with information leading to the safe return of Madeleine, from Rothley in Leicestershire. Businessman Sir Richard Branson, footballer Wayne Rooney and children's author JK Rowling are among those who have contributed. Map of resort

"Today we should be celebrating the fourth birthday of our daughter Madeleine," said Mr McCann. "Instead we have had to remember what a normal, beautiful, vivacious, funny, courageous and loving little girl we are missing today." Madeleine's uncle, John McCann, praised the amount of support the family has received from people in the UK. He told the BBC on Sunday: "The general response has been magnificent - the wishes and the prayers that are coming in from all over the country has been astounding." The official ground search for Madeleine in the Algarve has ended, but police say they still have significant leads to follow up. The focus has shifted from a local search for Madeleine to an international child abduction inquiry, amid suggestions she may have been taken out of Portugal. Some of the nine people who were questioned on Thursday and Friday - mainly family and friends of the McCanns - may be asked to make formal court statements, BBC correspondent Alison Roberts said. Police have said none of the people in the McCanns' close circle is a suspect. Detectives are also continuing to cross-check CCTV footage of several cars with witness statements in their efforts to identify a possible abductor, our correspondent said. Police have declined to confirm or deny reports about any possible leads, citing Portuguese law. The international number for Crime stoppers is +44 1883 731 336. Maddie's eyes

Madeleine's Eye Holds Vital Clue
Madeleine McCann's family believe a new picture of the missing four-year-old could play a vital role in the search for her. The photo clearly shows her distinctive right eye, where the pupil runs into the blue-green iris. It is this distinguishing mark that will identify Madeleine to those on the lookout for her, according to aunt and uncle John and Diane McCann. The Glasgow couple aim to distribute the appeal poster, which features the Crimestoppers telephone number, as far afield as they can. Family friend Andrew Renwick told Sky News that support for the search had been "overwhelming" and her family were extremely grateful. Mrs McCann said: "The purpose of the poster is to highlight the distinction in Madeleine's eye. "We want to make the most of it, because we know her hair could potentially be cut or dyed." Mr McCann added: "The poster was designed by a friend of the family and I've begun emailing it to acquaintances in different parts of the world. "I'm asking people to circulate it the best they can and make it be seen."
