Starting from the beginning, tell us about your background, education and why you embarked on setting up a Michelle Belau franchise?
With a background in marketing and communications, I built my career in South America. Having worked in Peru briefly, I moved to Brazil where I worked for the regional office of a non-profit organization called AIESEC. I was later promoted to the global leadership team in The Netherlands.
Continuing in the marketing field, in 2007, I joined UBS Investment Bank in London to lead the campus marketing team for Europe before moving to Middle East to setup the communications department for DHL – Danzas in Dubai.
After gaining local experience and obtaining an MBA degree from a recognized American school, I identified an opportunity for a concept such as Michèlle Belau, and decided to bring the franchise to Dubai.
What was your vision behind launching Michelle Belau in the Middle East, in particular Dubai?
The concept of Michèlle Belau goes beyond the clothes, it is based on the philosophy that each woman is beautiful in their own and unique way. We reinforce that message in every aspect of the company; from the production of the clothes to the services in the Atelier. It is a 100% customer oriented brand and this is something I missed in the retail industry in Dubai. Being an independent company allows us to make decisions that are relevant to the customers. This is something highly appreciated by our clients.
What are the challenges that you face being a woman entrepreneur?
Fortunately, I haven’t faced many challenges for being a woman. As an entrepreneur though, you have to be very conscious of budgets and be creative to achieve what big companies do with greater resources. It is not easy, but certainly satisfying when achieved.
In the Dubai government, I believe there is great support to woman entrepreneurs. There is always a friendly smile when dealing with the DED for transactions. I believe there is respect for women in business.
How do you balance being a wife, mother and having a successful career?
It is an everyday task. I have a wonderful husband and we support each other to be present in our children’s life. I also have a wonderful nanny, Iliana, who helps us when we need to be in 3 places at the time. Living in a country far from our family, it is important to count on a support system around you.
What motivates and inspires you?
The possibility to do more and better. I am very competitive, so I am always trying to seek for better ways to do things, to do things not just well but extraordinary.
Who is your role model and why?
I have many influencers in every aspect of my life; as a professional, as a mother, as a wife, as a human being. For example, when working in Europe, I had one of the top senior managers of DHL as a mentor, she was very inspirational and instrumental in my career during a particular time. I admire strong women in leadership.
When did your passion for fashion start?
Since very young age, I used to go with my mother to the tailor to design our own clothes when I was six. We would choose the fabric and the design in a lot of detail given my mother has limited sight.
Michelle Belau’s collections are catered to fit a variety of women with different body types, tell us how this is achieved?
This is a key factor from the very beginning of the production process, because we want our clothes to be relevant to our customer, women, real women. We base our designs on a realistic body type, keeping in mind that woman come in different shapes and sizes. We offer size 4 to size 16 which is the equivalent of 48 in European measures. Selecting the right fabric is also very important. Whether it will go around the hips or how the fabric will fall to enhance the features and style the silhouette is all considered.
What special services does Michelle Belau offer?
We have a resident stylist in the Atelier whose job is to advice customers based on their specific needs and requirements. In a one-to-one session, whether the customer is looking for a garment for a special occasion or a complete wardrobe makeover, she will find a solution for the customer. We carefully assess the client to determine what colours are most favourable, and what cuts fit best given the clients body share and complexion.
Alteration services are complimentary, and magazines and a drawing table are provided as entertainment for husbands and children. We also launched shop.michellebelau.ae to allow our customers to browse or order the collection from the comfort of their home.
Do you believe fashion plays an important role for a business women?
Absolutely. Fashion is expression and it takes only a short time to create a first impression, so I believe it is important to ensure that whatever you wear reflects what you want to communicate and how you want people around you (stakeholders, customers, employees, investors) to perceive you.
What is your power suit?
I love summer suits so lighter colors and ¾ sleeves are my preference. In this regard my power suit is this beautiful soft blue two piece that I treasure for some time now. I makes me feel strong while also very feminine and beautiful.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Opportunities are scarce, so take them when they present themselves. I remember my mother telling me this when I was a teenager and I still keep it in mind in life and business. I always say to myself, why not?

Born in Iraq, but flitting between California and London for most of her adolescent life, Asil is an integral part of a creative family that comprises of architects, artists, designers and engineers. “My father was a pioneer for solar energy, one of three in the world at that time, and extremely creative- from an engineering perspective. My mother was an interior designer and a lover of fashion,” she beams. One can only imagine that with all this creativity surrounding Asil, there was only one career path destined for her.
“A friend of mine reminded me, which I still don’t recall, that at the age of 10, I stood up at school and said I was going to be an interior designer when asked what I wanted to be, ” she states – and that’s exactly what she did and graduated in, setting up her own successful interior design company in London, working with commercial and private projects.
Her career then took her to work with Harrods, were she was headhunted as a Buyer manager for their fashion accessories. “Working for Harrods was my first step into the fashion world and I loved every bit of it. I flew to all parts of the world, attended fashion shows, tradeshows, you name it, I was there! It was an amazing and memorable time in my life, were I was also fortunate to work closely with Mohamed Al-Fayed, one of the first key influences in my career. It’s interesting because many people assume he’s eccentric and perhaps a challenging personality, but for me he was inspirational. He taught me the power of engagement with your team, business and customers. He knew all his staff’s names and would walk around the shop floor four times a day, interacting with his customer on a personal level, whilst happily giving lollipops to excited children.” A magical time in her careers she recalls.
Moving to Dubai in 2008, Asil worked for Al Tayer for just under two years, then for Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) as their Fashion CEO for four years, where she brought Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Halston Heritage amongst other brands to the Middle East. “My biggest achievement at Majid Al Futtaim was introducing a wonderful social responsibility programme, an objective that was not about profit, but people and charity. We did some great initiatives that saw us work with schools with special needs and many charities, the staff were so motivated knowing the harder we worked, the more we could give and change peoples lives for the better – and that’s exactly what we did, we changed hundreds of people lives. It was really that simple,” she explains. A CEO very connected with her 500 team of staff, a big family, turned MAF Fashion around and placed the business on the fashion map.
Having gained fashion stripes, with 20 years working in the corporate world of fashion and helping businesses flourish, Asil wanted to take her wealth of experience in the future generations of creatives. “I am very passionate about emerging designers, I don’t think they get the support they need. Its often a struggle for new talent to make a difference, make a name for themselves and get recognition,” which led Asil set up two business ventures, Lead Associates, an advisory service supporting brands and companies in business management, restructuring strategy and new concept creation, with a team that collectively has over 100 years of industry know how; and Est2014 (Established 2014), with a vision to empower the new generation of designers, fostering their potential and launching them as regional and International future heritage labels. “We scout talent in the Middle East and beyond, recruit the best creatives in fashion and art, and work with them on their brand, collection, logistics, manufacturing and sales for commercial success. We are looking for the next McQueen, Vera Wang and Vivienne Westwood.” A year-long bootcamp programme, with Aiisha Ramadan and Hussein Bazaza as graduates – recently graced Fashion Forward, Season 5 with their Autum/Winter 2015 collection. “I love what I do,” she glows, “Creative people motivate me. It’s extraordinary being constantly surrounded by talents that are constantly generating newness, ideas, theories and techniques.”
A creative herself, a multi-tasker – ‘a Gemini thing’ she states, as we both high-five excited that we share the same star sign – stays grounded by her Islamic faith. “My faith is incredibly important to me, and a huge priority in my life- it keeps me sane. With no exception, my day starts with praying and reading the Quran, a peaceful way to welcome the day ahead,’ she confesses.
“My father’s -peace be with him- advice to us was to never compromise on your belief, always stay true to yourself and always act with your values – this is how I live my life.” she shares. Following from her father’s example, Asil’s advice to business women, entrepreneurs and designers is to, “Follow your dream, be passionate and love what you do, do not compromise, work hard and always have self belief. However, the best advice I could give anyone is to always stay humble. Humility is a priceless commodity and a successful one.”
