Driving home, across the field she saw it. It took her breath away. The harvest moon, hanging so low in the sky, it was sitting on the old rickety fence. It was so bright, so orange, so ripe. She pulled over and just stared. A lovers moon. A dancers moon. A moon to make you remember. She let it embrace her, feel her. She smiled that silly wistful smile, the woman's smile. This is so foolish she thought as her hand reached to open the door. It was so cold, as she made her way toward the fence, she was trembling. I never learn, she said to no one but herself, her breath hung in the air and she laughed. It was just such a magic moon, she had no choice. The grass was slick under her sneakers. The owls cried in the distance and somewhere a dog was barking. She slowly and carefully climbed the old fence and sat on the top rail. She tilted her head back and sighed deeply. This moon, this moment could not be denied. She spread her arms wide, breathed in and just let it come. Memories. Words. A glance. A hand. A scent. A low whisper.
She was standing, trembling and his breath on the back of her neck, a hand on her shoulder. She didn't breathe, she didn't move. A voice in her ear that said her name in a whisper so low and so sweet. A finger tip tracing her cheek, brushing her hair from her face. His hand running so slowly so gently down her neck, lips on her cheek. She turned, his eyes on hers. She was truly lost. He pulled her in and she felt the power of the moment, of surrender, of letting go. His scent on her skin, his voice in her ear, his eyes on hers.
Sitting on a fence, staring at a lovers moon, she was there again. Every detail, every movement, every word burned in her. She was haunted by it, mesmerized, foolish held captive in moment of time. She smiled up at this crazy moon. Like candles the stars blinked on across a blue black sky. Laughing out loud she said simply in a girl's innocent voice: starlight, starbright, the first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.......
