What is and what is not attractive is defined personally but society does play a role. It is very interesting to me because with this subject matter we all define what is and what is not attractive, differently. But as most of you know, what you find attractive now will most likely change as you get older and as you go through different stages of your lives. One thing that is very interesting is that we all tend to follow "social norms" when it comes to attraction. For example, if the majority of girls in high school think the quarterback is attractive then other girls will tend to think that way. George Clooney has been around for a very long time, why all of a sudden do we all think he is attractive? Sure he is a good looking guy, but he has always been a good looking guy, so what has changed? Because, he is now popular and we tend to follow the social norms when it comes to our perception of what is and what is not attractive. Of course there are many of you who disagree and think George Clooney is unattractive as hell, but most women who think he is unattractive, are the minority.
In our society we tend to give praise to people who are outspoken or outgoing, who has money, who is smarter than the average bear, who can dunk a basketball better than the next guy and so on. People who are not the norm tends to be attractive to us. Michael Jackson can sing and he can dance, but if a guy on the street corner sang better than Michael and danced better than Michael, would we all react the same? We would most likely find him attractive because he is a good dancer and singer which are two talents that are hard to come by, but would we start crying and fainting like many have done at a Michael Jackson concert, probably not.
One day I was looking through some real old pictures at my grandparent's house and I saw this picture of my grandparents when they were dating. My dagrandpa (I am afraid to admit) had this awful tight white polyester bell bottom suit and this wide collar red polyester shirt on. I asked my grandma what was he thinking and she told me that all the men dressed like this at the time because Saturday Night Fever was just released and disco was in at the time. Because my grandpa was following a trend, my grandma thought he was cool and she became interested in him and then they got married and began a family.
You all know what you like and what you find attractive and I think that is good. But, be careful because a lot of us are so caught up on the looks, the money, the popularity that we really do not pay attention to the person on the inside and that person ends up hurting us. A lot of times, when a person is seen as popular, that popularity can go to their heads and they can become very abusive. Because they are good looking they feel that they can cheat as much as they want, lie as much as they want, or even talk down to people as much as they want. The worst type of situation is a person that has a certain amount of power. A lot of people have this complex that when they are in power they feel the world should be at their beck and call and then they become very abusive.
The point I am trying to make is, you all know what you like and do not like and that is good. But, get to know the real person on the inside before you commit to something serious because you may end up in a very bad situation that may be hard to get out of in the future.
