mum expired. [EVERYONE]

I have a cat that i got in December of 2008. When we got her she was living in a filthy lil shack and i saw no food and no water and a nasty over flowing litter box so i took her home...and still now when you walk into the room or try to pick her up she runs and hides! Is it possible that this cat is like tramatised from living over there or is she still adjusting?
