What are you waiting for?
I saw something very disturbing the other day, which brings me to my blog today. My family and I were standing in the checkout lane at Wal-Mart and standing in front of us was a mother and her daughter. The mother was around my age and the daughter could not have been over the age of 9. I was watching the mother and daughter talk back and forth and thought of myself and my daughter talking pretty much the same way…just normal stuff like clothes and nail polish…you know girl stuff. Well, as I was watching the two banter back and forth I looked at the girls shirt because I though that it was a pretty shade of pink…. well to my amazement the words “PORN STAR” was on the front of this little girls shirt. The mother sees me reading her shirt and also sees me raise my eyebrows. The mother starts talking to me saying, “Kids nowadays wear the most outrageous clothes. When I take her shopping she won’t even let me pick out her clothes. I used to dress her up in the cutest things and when she turned 7 she would not wear anything that I picked out.” Now mind you, I let my daughter have some say in the clothes that we buy her, but if I think that it isn’t age appropriate or crude then my answer is a resounding NO ABSOLUTELY NOT. This mother is droning on and on throughout her whole check out process and I am only half listening and giving the appropriate uh huh’s in her pause for breath, but in the back of my mind, I am thinking WTF do you mean she won’t let you pick out her clothes…I can see giving her some liberty of say in choosing some of her clothing but to say that she is going to wear whatever she wants without some parental guidance! Her actions as a parent were ludicrous in my opinion…. I mean who is the parent and who is the child?
I thought that the parents were the ones putting the clothing on these children’s backs and paying the bills in their households. When did parents surrender the right to guide their children to make good life choices? I can seriously see an adult wearing that shirt, but an 8-9 year old child? That just blows me away. If the mother did not truly care what her child was wearing then why did she feel the need to explain herself to me? My own daughter asked me what a porn star was…I quickly changed the subject because at the moment I did not have a rational answer to give her. She was glad that I brought up the subject of vacation…and I was glad that she let go of the question.
I see kids at the age of 6 and 7 with cell phones, blackberrys, and side kicks…I mean come on people what does a 6 and 7 year old need a cell phone/blackberry/side kick for anyway? One of my friends gave her 8 year old a cell phone this past Christmas…she thought that it was cute that he had one and his little friends didn’t (she was trying to be better than the Jones’s). Well, it was cute until she got a 700.00 cell phone bill for one month because he decided that he wanted to talk to his friends on his cool cell phone rather than the home phone. Little did she know that the current month’s total was already over 700 bucks…now that’s 1400.00 for two months. I can think of a lot of things I could do with 1400.00 rather than waste it on a cell phone bill…. I hate it that our bill is over 200 bucks a month and we use it for business only! Kids nowadays are so savvy…they have much more technology today than most of us did when we were kids. When we were kids, we played tag, shot marbles, skipped rope, climbed trees, and played outside using our imaginations. Kids nowadays sit in front of a computer and you know what a horror scene that could be if they are not monitored. I am just wondering if we are letting them grow up too fast instead of enjoying the perils of childhood…I am not saying that we should keep them ignorant, just keeping their minds young just a tad bit longer…life is hard as we all know. Why drag them into it well before they are ready? This is just my opinion and if you are one of those liberal parents then maybe you can give me some of the pros and benefits to letting your children make their own choices at such young ages.
