As usual, Kantar has published data on the distribution of mini tablet pc smartphone operating systems Android, iOS and Windows Phone. The reference period is March, April and May 2014 compared to the same period of 2013. Starting from the situation in Europe with the analysis of the five major markets, we find a small increase for all major OS except Blackberry continues its decline, shrinking the share to 0.8%. Android continues to lead the way (+1.5%, 73.3% of the total), while iOS holds a double share than Windows Phone.

Numbers weighs the launch of Galaxy S5 convincing in Europe and the USA (where it is the second most sold after the iPhone) but you expect more growth with new releases of June and July. Italy does not reflect the European data, but rather show a general decline only where Android takes hit and grew by 6.4%, followed by a shy +0.2% of Windows Phone that is getting closer to iOS in decline (-2.3%).

Analyzing the situation in the U.S. where iOS has so far always managed to get good numbers, we find that the decline of Apple suffers a -9.4% reaching a market share of 32.5%. Interestingly, the points lost from iOS are the same gnawed by Android which grew by 9.9%. We close with a stronghold for Apple, Japan: here Android suffers relative to the competitor which holds 51.7% market share (+2.1% in May).
