In its second year playing under coach Matt Jernigan, the eighth-grade girls’ basketball team is off to a 2-0 start.
A year ago, the class played under Jernigan as seventh-graders, and after starting the season 0-4, they rebounded to win their final six games of the year to end the season 6-4.
Lebanon faced the Rolla Bulldogs in its first game of the season on Monday. In the ‘A’ game, the ‘Jackets led at the end of the first half, 18-8, despite a 1-for-8 performance at the free throw line. In the second half, Lebanon heated up and went on to win 43-21.
Ashton Light led all scorers with 20 points, while Becky Brooner and Ashley Schafer added seven points each.
Lebanon also won the ‘B’ game, 31-21. Renee Hudson and Lauren Pentecost led the team with six points each.
Playing its second game in two days, Lebanon traveled on Tuesday to Jefferson City to take on the Thomas Jefferson Patriots. In the ‘A’ game, the ‘Jackets again came out struggling from the floor, but Maggie Vaughn and Mikayla Widhalm pulled Lebanon out of the slump in the second quarter. The ‘Jackets never trailed in the game and went on to win 38-12.
Widhalm led Lebanon in scoring with 14 points, six of which came from the free throw line. Vaughn also added nine points.
The ‘B’ game ended up being the game of the night with a tight ballgame wire-to-wire. Ally Britt had a great first quarter, scoring all of the ‘Jackets’ seven points of the quarter. Late in the fourth quarter Lebanon’s Hannah Clark hit a 3-point shot that would prove to be the game winner for Lebanon as they won by a score of 19-16.
“Both nights the ‘Jackets showed that defense is going to be the key to their success this year,” Jernigan said. “The ‘A’ team has only allowed 33 points in two games, and they will have to keep that defense strong when they face a solid Waynesville team on Thursday.”
