What are you waiting for?

In a blinking of an eye, things can change drastically. I should have known they were going to change for the worse for me when I bent over to pick something up and my pants tore. UGH! Yesterday, the kids and I had a great day…er, evening. We went out trick or treating out in a small town where my sister lives. Then we went back to her house and had a wonderful dinner with her, her family and my dad and his girlfriend. We all pitched in helping make the meal. The kids were well behaved and when I got home I found out I had some good news and some bad news. The good news was that I got a call from a prospective employer I really want to have a job with. The bad news was I was not home to take that call. It didn't matter though last night because everything was so perfect. We had awesome weather for Indiana for trick or treating. We didn't even need to wear our winter coats!! It looked like God had put on a light show in the sky just to give it a festive mood. The sky was streaked with orange, red, pink and crimson colors and it even made the air look ruddy. It was the happiest I had been since I moved up here to start my life over with my kids. I got up this morning… I was determined not to loose the ‘happy’ momentum I had acquired from the night before. The kids were trying this morning, but nothing that I couldn’t talk them through. And then that eye blinked! My daughter told me as she left the house that a hair band was out on the ground getting wet… I stepped out of the house with a school bus full of kids watching me… bent over and RRRRRRRRRRRRIPPPPPPPPPP! The side seam of my flimsy jeans tore… and of course it had to tear on my side that was visible to the school kids… why would fate have it any other way? I told myself… no need to let this get me down…they are old flimsy jeans… no big loss… nothing to get down about… no one probably even noticed on the bus. Besides, I had to return that call to that employer who was most defiantly going to hire me. I made the phone call and surprise, surprise!! She actually answered her phone! Normally I could not get through for anything! I was jazzed! I couldn’t wait to get started and then she told me that she offered the job to someone else at the beginning of last week. My training from all my teen queen pageants kicked in, “be graceful and beautiful, even when defeated”, and all the other additives like “Don’t burn any bridges”, “Leave a good impression.” So I stayed graceful and pleasant under the most painful circumstances. I told her that I really appreciated her taking the time to call me and tell me personally. She said that since she did work for the Chamber of Commerce, she often hears about jobs others do not know about first and she would pass me along to someone else if they need help. So, the high is over. Back in the valley were I belong I guess. Everyone keeps telling me that things will get better… I wonder if and or when that will EVER happen.
