I promise to be a companion
To not try to force you to do what you don't want
To not ask repeatedly about things you don't want
Or don't want to talk about
I promise to hold you when you're hurting and I am there
To kiss away the tears after the last one has fallen
To be strong for you when you are crying
To be a comfort and someone to fall on
I don't promise to erase your pain
To protect and shelter you from suffering
To hold you back from anyone or anything, even if that means losing us
To keep you from your freedom and independence
But I promise to soften the shadows in life's hallways
To offer two arms and warmth to turn to
To offer ears that will not only hear, but listen
To embrace you, your pain, and all that you offer without judgement
And if your pain is gone, if you no longer think about it
I promise to be happy for you
To rest with you in that moment
And to keep doing what I've done to bring you here
I promise to give you a chance
To not run when things get tough
To not dismiss you if we become closer
To face my own fears and not let them drive me or push you away
I promise to stand with you as best I can
For however long you want me to

Even when you cannot stand with me
I promise that when I don't speak
It's because I'm listening to every thing you say
It's because I'm here for you and I want to understand you

I promise to want you for who you are, both light and heavy

To catch you when you fall, and still see you as strong
