History of Clancy

Clancy is by no means a "super bike" nor a big thundering cruiser. Bikes like Clancy are milestones, breaking many established records and riding into history with pride and dignity. Clancy has brothers that are in museums around the world, graced the covers of several magazines and is selling for more than the purchase price of new here in the us. These bikes are known to achieve 100 thousand miles. Just how many bikes have that kind of history and with legendary success for so many first introductions of technology? I know of a few, One is the Vincent Series D Black Shadow The FIRST 100 MPH Cruiser and I believe this was 1955, ( Honda's use of the word Shadow was "borrowed " from Vincent) another is The Honda cb4ooT.
Honda had a good bike with the cb360 a world class racer for years which came to an end when Kawasaki and Suzuki launched an attack on Honda with their 400 four stroke twins (2 cylinder motors). There was a 400 cc Honda 4 cylinder already on the market. Honda had to develop a more competitive 400 four stroke two cylinder too counter the competition. The result was the new 1978 cb400 from the ground up and in 1978 and 1979 this bike out sold and out raced and out performed both Kawasaki and Suzuki in the 400 class, They had their 2 valve heads delivered to them on a silver platter by Mr. Tadashi Kume, the Director of Honda Research and Development and the Honda cb400T.
Honda introduced for the first time an electronic ignition, pent house pistons, the two inlet valves per cylinder, a large bore carb for each cylinder, & the big bore, short stroke engine (first time for this style of inline engine) was packed in to a 400cc 2 cylinder motor that red lines at 10,000 rpms and added a five speed transmission and the longest wheel base in this class with a rake of 27 degrees and optional Com-Star wheels with 39-43 horses and approx. 32 foot lbs of torque . The tires were the largest available on this size bike and were made just for the Honda cb's by Brigstone. There was nothing like this cb400t. Bike enthusiast of all ability's and racing professional responded and Honda out sold the competition almost 2 to 1.,
Honda for years tried to sell their product as "commuter" bikes, This was the first time they advertised it as a street/ sport bike. They were right on the money.

Clancy was offered in three models

1978 CB400A Hawk Hondamatic with a 395cc 3-valve parallel twin linked to a 2-speed automatic transmission.
1978 to 1979 CB400TI Hawk I with a 395cc OHC, 3-valve parallel twin linked to a 5-speed manual transmission
1978 to 1979 CB400TII Hawk II with a 395cc OHC, 3-valve parallel twin linked to a 5-speed manual transmission
1980 to 1981 CB400T Hawk with a 395cc OHC, 3-valve parallel twin linked to a 6-speed manual transmission
1989 to 1990 CB400F (CB-1) with a 399cc DOHC inline four 4-valve liquid cooled linked to a 6-speed manual transmission

The cb400A, a semi clutch less automatic ( 2 speeds low and high, $1.400.00 new) .
Hawk I , An economy model ( $1.100.00 new) with laced wheels no tac or center stand and kick start only and drum brakes . , This was 21 lbs lighter and was the fastest of the "Brothers" .
The cb400t sport or Type II which is what Clancy is ($1.300.00 new) with the revolutionary Com-Star wheels, the strongest of the day, kick and electric start and center stand and disk front brake and a tachometer. Each model had a different paint scheme.
The cb400 I and II were faster than the 400F and the six cylinder 750 cbx.
In 1980 the cb400 was down toned to help sell the Night Hawk, Horse power was reduced to 27. Honda also had a cb400n which was a six speed and a Tourer. The cb400 is still in production.
The very Honda you ride today has technology that was first introduced on Clancy, like electronic ignition and disk breaks and composite wheels and 4-ply bias type tires.
I'm not familiar with anything Harley had in this size bike .The closest I believe was a 750 as their smallest offering and that was an older design made famous by Evel Knievel in the mid 1970's.
