SURREY, B.C. -- A change in play-calling philosophy coupled with an improved offensive line has put the B.C. Lions in a position to play for the Grey Cup on their home field. All-star centre Angus Reid said the Lions made changes after starting the CFL season as a predictable drop-back passing team with the odd run sprinkled in. "We werent winning games, the quarterbacks getting hit too much and we were running a completely unbalanced offence," Reid said Tuesday at the Lions practice facility. "Youre not going to survive throughout the course of the season." Changes were made after a 30-27 loss on Aug. 13 to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers -- Sundays title game opponent -- that dropped the Lions to 1-6 on the season. Now theres more motion with multiple backs running the football. Or slotback Kierrie Johnson taking a handoff and scampering around the end. Or halfback Andrew Harris hauling in a Travis Lulay touchdown pass like he did in Sundays 40-23 West semifinal win over Edmonton. The play-selection changes helped the Lions offensive line allow only 29 sacks -- the fewest in the CFL -- but the Bombers accounted for 10 of them in two victories. Lulay was sacked six times in a 25-20 loss in Winnipeg on July 28. "Right now were a way better team than we were in the two times we played them," said right tackle Jovan Olafioye, whos up against Montreal tackle Josh Bourke for outstanding lineman honours. "(Were) much better in pass protection and run blocking. We were at the breaking point when we lost to Winnipeg the last time." So the Lions went into Edmonton the next week and beat the Eskimos 36-1. "We had nothing else to do but try something different," Reid said. "You got to the point where it was lets wholesale change it because otherwise the seasons over. "Since then weve kept tinkering with it and perfecting it and youve seen the outcome." The Bombers arrived in B.C. Tuesday night aware of their underdog status and knowing they have a tough week ahead. "We have one game left, and its the biggest one of the year," Bombers quarterback Buck Pierce said. "A lot of our team has never been in this situation before. Its important that we stay on pace and we treat it like a week of prep.dddddddddddd We have to be as focused as weve ever been." The Lions won 10 of 11 games down the stretch, finished first in the West, had nine all-star selections and Lulay was nominated for the outstanding player award. Assistant coach Kelly Bates said the Lions were able to open up their playbook as a result of the mid-season changes. "Weve been able to have a flow to the game," he said. "All those things contribute to putting your offensive line and your offence in a better position to have success." Harris, a second-year back who had eight touchdowns over the season, has watched the improvement in front of him. "I feel theyre still getting better," he said of the linemen. "One more game to go and I know theyll do fine." Starting right guard Dean Valli said reducing drop-back passes has been key. "You can be the best pass protector in the world but the more times you drop back the more times youre going to get beat," Valli said. "If they know youre going to be drop-back passing on every down theyre going to tee off on you and pull out every move they can think of." Completing the quintet in front of Lulay are import left tackle Ben Archibald, who won outstanding lineman honours last season with Calgary, and left guard Jesse Newman, a Vancouver native acquired in a trade with the Stampeders. "I can only imagine the comfort level for him," Reid said when asked how the improved offensive line has helped Lulay. "It allows him to sit there and make decisions based on the play and not on pressure. "If its time to throw, if its time to run or if its time to dump it off to the running back is based on the best decision for the play ... not on necessity for saving your butt from getting whacked. "Thats when youre making the right decisions based on the right reasons, not on panic." Notes: Reid will be playing in his third Grey Cup game. It will be the second championship for Newman, Archibald and Valli ... The Lions made the CFL playoffs for the 15th consecutive season. ... Winnipeg reached the post-season in 17 consecutive years from 1980-1996 while Edmonton had a 34-consecutive year playoff run from 1972-2005. ' ' '
