PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Fuelled by outrage from even the governor when the video went public, Rutgers fired basketball coach Mike Rice on Wednesday after deciding it didnt go far enough by suspending and fining him for shoving, kicking and throwing balls at players along with spewing gay slurs. Athletic director Tim Pernetti was given a copy of the tape by a former employee in November and, after an independent investigator was hired to review it, Rice was suspended for three games, fined $75,000 and ordered to attend anger management classes. University president Robert Barchi signed off on the penalty. But on Wednesday, Rutgers referred to new information and "a review of previously discovered issues" as the reasons for Rices termination. "Yesterday, I personally reviewed the video evidence, which shows a chronic and pervasive pattern of disturbing behaviour," Barchi said in a statement. "I have now reached the conclusion that Coach Rice cannot continue to serve effectively in a position that demands the highest levels of leadership, responsibility and public accountability. He cannot continue to coach at Rutgers University." The video shows numerous clips of Rice at practice firing basketballs at players, hitting them in the back, legs, feet and shoulders. It also shows him grabbing players by their jerseys and yanking them around the court. Rice can also be heard yelling obscenities and using gay slurs. Rice, in his third season with the Scarlet Knights, addressed reporters outside his home in Little Silver, N.J., and apologized for his actions: "As I stated three months ago after I watched the video how deeply regrettable those actions (were). I also stated I was going to try to work on changing. I think Ive accomplished a lot of that," Rice said. "I cant say anything right now except Im sorry and there will never be a time where Im going to use any of that as an excuse or there will be any excuse. "Ive let so many people down: my players, my administration, Rutgers University, the fans. My family, whos sitting in their house just huddled around because of the fact their father was an embarrassment to them. Its troubling, but at some time maybe Ill try to explain it. But right now theres no explanation for whats on those films. There is no excuse for it. I was wrong. I want to tell everybody whos believed in me that Im deeply sorry for the pain and hardship that Ive caused. " Gov. Chris Christie, who said he was appalled when he saw the video on Tuesday, supported the firing at the states flagship public university. "This was a regrettable episode for the university, but I completely support the decision to remove Coach Rice," he said in a statement. "It was the right and necessary action to take in light of the conduct displayed on the videotape. "Parents entrust their sons to the Rutgers athletic department and the mens basketball program at an incredibly formative period of their lives. The way these young men were treated by the head coach was completely unacceptable and violates the trust those parents put in Rutgers University. All of the student-athletes entrusted to our care deserve much better." Rice, who helped Robert Morris to two NCAA tournament appearances, was one of the hot coaching candidates in the spring of 2010. But he wasnt able to push Rutgers into the upper echelon of the Big East Conference, and went 44-51. Rice was 16-38 in the Big East, after going 73-31 in three seasons at Robert Morris. The Scarlet Knights went 15-16 this season and 5-13 in the league. Pernetti took responsibility for trying to rehabilitate Rice instead of firing him. "Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community," he said. Rice was Pernettis first major hire after getting the ADs job. Pernetti said his decision to only suspend Rice was made in part because the coach was remorseful. Rice had a reputation as being "a fiery guy with an edge" before coming to Rutgers and Pernetti said the two talked about it for five hours before he was hired. The video was made by Eric Murdock, the former NBA player who was hired by Rice to be director of player development. The two had a falling out over Murdocks appearances at a camp, and Pernetti said Murdocks contract was not renewed. Murdock, who said he was fired, then compiled the video, splicing together the practice lowlights of Rices first three years as coach. Pernetti said about 60 per cent of the incidents happened in Rices first season. He also was upset with Rice using a certain gay slur at a university where student Tyler Clementi committed suicide after a roommate used a webcam to see him kissing a man. "I would tell you that that word was at the core of the suspension," Pernetti said. "It absolutely concerns me. Its not acceptable." OKLAHOMA CITY -- Dirk Nowitzki was hoping for the same kind of friendly bounce that allowed Kevin Durant to put the Oklahoma City Thunder ahead in their first-round playoff series. When Nowitzki didnt get it, the Dallas Mavericks could only settle for another frustratingly close loss and an uphill climb to survive in their first post-season since winning the NBA title. Russell Westbrook scored 29 points, Durant added 26 in an off-shooting performance and Oklahoma City clawed out a 102-99 victory over Dallas on Monday night to take a 2-0 series lead. The Mavs led in the final minute of both games in Oklahoma City but couldnt even manage a split as the Thunder gutted out two wins by a total of four points. "Thats what the playoffs are about," Westbrook said. "Toughness." Durant hit two free throws with 50.4 seconds left to give Oklahoma City a 98-97 lead, and James Harden hit four more foul shots to close it out for the Thunder. Jason Terry missed two 3-point attempts from the left wing in the final 5 seconds that could have tied it and set up overtime. "We come away from these two games disappointed but not dismayed. You tip your hat to the fact that they have made some big time plays," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "Now, weve got to go home and do the same." Game 3 is Thursday night in Dallas. "Were just a couple bounces away from being up 2-0," said Nowitzki, who led Dallas with 31 points but missed both his shots in the final 75 seconds. "Its tough and its frustrating, but were going to keep coming. Were not going to lay down. If they beat us, were going to make them earn it." Durant put the Thunder ahead to stay after salvaging two key points with Oklahoma City inbounding the ball with only 2.6 seconds left on the shot clock. He grabbed the inbounds pass from Harden while headed toward the sideline, and Terry was called for a foul for bumping him. Durant hit both foul shots, and Nowitzki missed his chance to answer with a fade-away 12-foot jumper from the left side. He compared it to Durants foul-line jumper -- on which he later admitted he couldnt even see the rim -- that hit the front rim and backboard before falling in with 1.5 seconds left to win Game 1. "Ive made it 100 times. It bounced, hit every part of the rim and bounced off," Nowitzki said. "Thats kind of the way our seasons been going. "They get that bounce last game and we dont get it, so thats frustrating." After that, the Mavs were fighting from behind. Shawn Marion fouled Harden on the rebound, and the leagues top scoring reserve -- only eight days removed from a concussion suffered as the result of Metta World Peaces elbow to the head -- also converted both free throws. He hit two more with 15.6 seconds left after Terry got the Mavs within one with a driiving layup.dddddddddddd "Weve just got to continue to take that punch from them and do a great job of sticking together," Durant said. "Games like this in the playoffs, theyre going to get chippy and we know that. So, weve just got to play through it. This one nearly came to blows, literally. The tension escalated quickly after Serge Ibaka tried to block Nowitzkis jumper midway through the first quarter and smacked him in the left eye on his follow-through, without getting called for a foul. Nowitzki hit another jumper along the baseline on Dallas next possession before he got shoved in the back by Kendrick Perkins while jockeying for rebounding position on a made 3-pointer by Durant. Perkins followed Nowitzki for a few steps before Nowitzki bumped him away, and Perkins responded by taking a swing at Nowitzkis head with his open hand. Official Zach Zarba stepped in front of Perkins and backed him away, and both were assessed technical fouls. "He tried to bully me and I bullied back a little bit and talked about some stuff, and moved on," Nowitzki said. The Thunder erupted a few minutes later, scoring the final nine points of the first quarter -- all within an 82-second span -- and then carrying over the momentum to build a 46-30 lead with 5:55 left before halftime. When Nowitzki and Perkins finally got back on the court together, the Mavericks All-Star exacted some revenge while getting his team back in the game. He went on a personal 10-2 run, with all of the points coming while he was matched up against Perkins, to get the deficit down to 50-47. "Its playoff basketball. Its physical. We dont like the cheap shots when they give them, and they dont like them if we give them. Thats the nature of competition," Carlisle said. "I love hard-played, clean, competitive playoff series. You throw the ball up and may the best team win. "The dirty (expletive) has got to stop. We dont want anybody getting hurt out there, either way." Notes: After going back and forth responding to each others comments on how Oklahoma Citys defence on Nowitzki was officiated in Game 1, Brooks insisted any dispute with Carlisle wasnt personal. Years ago, the two roomed together while playing in the Continental Basketball Association. "He was a good roommate. He didnt snore," Brooks said. "Thats all it takes. Buy me a meal every now and then and not snore, youre a perfect roommate." He later playfully retorted: "If you want it to be personal, I was a better player. How many years did I play in the league? How many years did he play? I played over a decade. He played three." ... Marion hadnt made a playoff 3-pointer since 2007 before making two in Game 1. He had another in Game 2. ... Ibaka, who tied his regular season best with 22 points in the first game, got into foul trouble and scored only two. wholesale jerseys china ' ' '

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Steelers signed their first- round draft pick, linebacker Jarvis Jones, to a four-year contract on Monday. Jones, who was the 17th overall pick in this years draft, spent three years at the University of Georgia (2010-12) after playing one season at the University of Southern California (2009). Jones, a finalist for every major national defensive award this past season, led the Bulldogs to a 12-2 record and an appearance in the SEC Championship Game. The 23-year-old led the FBS ranks in sacks (14.5), tackles for loss (24.5) and forced fumbles (7) in addition to registering 85 overall stops and one interception last fall. Jones also set the Georgia single season record for sacks after racking up a pair in the Bulldogs 45-31 victory over Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl. Jones recorded 13 1/2 sacks and 19 1/2 tackles for loss as a sophomore in 2011, after sitting out the previous season as a transfer from USC. His freshman year at USC was limited to eight games due to a neck sprain. The Steelers have now signed seven of their nine selections from the 2013 NFL Draft. LeSean McCoy Youth Jersey . J.A. Happ struggled with his command and Torontos offence sputtered in key situations as the Blue Jays dropped a 3-1 decision to the Boston Red Sox. "Theres a line between not giving in and making quality pitches and I was constantly on the wrong side of that line tonight," said Happ, who gave up two earned runs, three hits and seven walks in 3 2-3 innings. "I made it tough on myself but our bullpen came in and did an awesome job, kept us right in the ballgame. "We were in the ballgame the whole time, we had an opportunity." Happ (2-2) and four Toronto relievers had a bend-but-dont-break night, combining for 10 walks, six hits and a wild pitch. The most walks the Red Sox had in a game this season prior to Thursday was nine in a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on April 16. Toronto lost its second consecutive game to Boston a few hours after putting right-hander Josh Johnson on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right triceps. Reliever Brad Lincoln was called up from triple-A Buffalo to take his place on the roster. Johnson is 0-1 with a 6.86 earned-run average in four starts since being acquired in a blockbuster off-season trade with the Miami Marlins. Left-hander Ricky Romero will make his season debut for the Blue Jays on Friday after one start in single-A Dunedin. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons suggested after the game that Happ may be struggling with mechanical issues in his delivery. "I think hes just lost his release point," said Gibbons. "Hes the type of pitcher where he pitches up in the zone and sometimes he loses that. Hes a big guy and its easier to sometimes lose that release point, repeat your delivery, whatever it is. "It happens two times and when that does happen you try to force it, you try a little harder and it gets tougher." Happ, however, thinks his control issues are in his head. "Ive looked at the mechanical thing and everything," said Happ. "I think its just a mental thing of finding a way to get it done and make a quality pitch." Ryan Dempster (2-2) of Gibsons, B.C., pitched six innings for Boston (20-8), improving to 6-0 against Canadian teams. Joel Hanrahan pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save on the year. "Im looking for more expansion teams in Canada," said Dempster, who became the first Canadian-born Red Sox starter to win in Canada since Rheal Cormier beat the Blue Jays in Toronto in 1995. "Thats kind of the goal. Maybe Vancouver will get a team, or Winnipeg or something, so I can hopefully keep that going." Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Carp led the Red Sox offence with a hit and an RBI each. Both Happ and Gibbons pointed to the strong performance of the bullpen too keep Toronto within reach.dddddddddddd "We had opportunities," said Gibbons. "It was a tight ball game, we come up with a big hit there, move the baseball somehow. Who knows, it might turn out differently. You never know, for sure." Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C., hit a home run for the Blue Jays (10-19), while Colby Rasmus single in the fourth inning was the 500th hit of his career. Rasmus was 3 for 4 on the night with three singles. Lawrie got the Blue Jays on the board early, hitting a home run to deep centre on Dempsters third pitch of the game. After Lind popped out to right field, Bautista reached first on a single up the third-base line but the inning ended when Edwin Encarnacion grounded into a double play. Happ laboured in the second, giving up a double to Mike Napoli to start the inning. He struck out Daniel Nava, but then Will Middlebrooks got on base with a walk. After Boston loaded the bases, Stephen Drew drove Middlebrooks in with a sacrifice fly to right field. Ellsburys popfly to centre ended the inning but Happ trailed 2-1 and had thrown 54 pitches after two. Toronto loaded the base in the third after three walks, but Encarnacion again grounded into a double play to end the threat. After getting a double play to start the fourth Happ walked three batters in a row and was pulled in favour of Lincoln, who ended the threat when Dustin Pedroia grounded into a forceout at second. Boston added to its lead in the sixth inning, as Ross got on base with a walk and was driven home by Ellsburys single to left field. The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the seventh after a Rasmus hit and walks to Munenori Kawasaki and Lawrie. However, Adam Lind struck out swinging to keep Toronto down by two. "We couldnt string anything together," said Lawrie. "We had a couple situations with the bases loaded and we just couldnt capitalize on it. Not really much more to say about it." J.P. Arencibia and Melky Cabrera both struck out with a runner on in the Blue Jays half of the eighth. Rasmus led off the ninth with a single, but pinch hitter Rajai Davis popped out and Kawasaki grounded into a double play to seal the victory for Boston. TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed first-round pick Doug Martin to a five-year contract. The Boise State running back was the 31st selection in the draft and is expected to share the workload as a rookie with third-year pro LeGarrette Blount. Martin rushed for 3,431 yards and 43 touchdowns while averaging more than five yards per carry. He also had 67 receptions for 715 yards and four TDs. He ran for 1,290 yards and 16 TDs as a senior at Boise State, capping his career with a school-record 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Arizona State in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas. Blount rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a rookie two years ago but has yet to develop into the type of every-down running back that first-year coach Greg Schiano seeks for his offence. womens Adrian Peterson Jersey . It was going to be one of those nights. A combination of bad bounces and what coach Martin Rennie called "poor play" doomed the Whitecaps to a 2-0 defeat against MLS-leading Dallas, extending their winless streak to five games. "We just made it too easy for them," Cannon said. "Unfortunately for us, we picked a tough night to have a tough night." That it was going to be a tough night was apparent very quickly. Dallas (6-1-1) dominated possession and pressed the attack in the first half, leading to a 7-4 advantage in shots and six corner kicks before intermission. Dallass fifth corner finally drew blood from the Whitecaps (2-3-2). Assigned to mark Dallas defender George John, centre back Brad Rusin did his job, getting between John and the net. But the powerful John simply bulled his way into Rusin, pushing him backward -- and right into the ball, which caromed off Rusins back and past Cannon. Vancouver defender Lee Young-Pyo, stationed on the near post, cleared it away, but not before it had crossed the line to put the Whitecaps behind 1-0. And things went downhill from there. "I thought at that point we had weathered a storm," Cannon said. "I felt bad for our guys. They fought, and to have an unlucky bounce like that, it was kind of demoralizing at the time. For some reason it took us a while to react." Indeed,, the Whitecaps never really did react.ddddddddddddDallass attackers consistently punched holes in the Vancouver defence, finishing with 13 shots and six on goal. Cannon kept the Whitecaps in it with five tough saves, but Dallas cemented its dominance in the 50th minute when Kenny Cooper fired a shot that glanced off Young-Pyo before striker Blas Perez redirected it with his head past Cannon for a 2-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Vancouver offence, weakened by the absence of forwards Kenny Miller (hamstring) and Corey Hertzog (concussion), generated few real scoring chances. The best came late in the first half when midfielder Matt Watson took advantage of a dropped ball by Dallas keeper Raul Fernandez and slipped a shot that appeared to be going in before John raced back to kick it away in the nick of time. "We didnt really click early on and you could see that," Watson said. "We were a little bit off our game, maybe a little low on confidence. "All over, we werent very good. We didnt close them down as quick as we could, gave them too much time. Things become easy for them when they have time on the ball. Were very disappointed in ourselves and our performances." For the Whitecaps, who havent won since March 9, the challenge is in how they react to their performance. They face FC Edmonton on Wednesday in the Amway Canadian Championships, then return home to meet FC Dallas again next Saturday. "Is it a setback?" Cannon said, repeating a reporters question. "Thats up to the guys and how we react (to determine) if its a setback or just a kick in the ass." wholesale jerseys china ' ' '

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- James Hahn jumped all over his drive on the par-5 fifth hole at La Quinta Country Club, then hit his second shot so pure that it went a little father than he wanted. Undaunted, he turned to his trusty 54-degree wedge and holed a 30-foot, bump-and-run chip for eagle, part of a late birdie-eagle-birdie run that gave him a share of the second-round lead Friday in the Humana Challenge. "It was a long-drive stat hole, so I kind of came out of my shoes a little bit," Hahn said about his 310-yard poke on the tree-lined hole. That left him 220 yards, and he figured a smooth 3-iron was his best play "I didnt want to really overpower a 4-iron," Hahn said. "I had a lot of adrenaline." He made perfect contact. "Just hit it too good," Hahn said. "Hit the centre of the green, landed it 220, rolled to the back. ... I could have hit it with a 6-iron and probably hit it within 2 feet." It didnt matter when the chip rolled in. "I read the break perfectly, broke about 2 feet straight down the hill," Hahn said. Hahn finished with a 5-under 67 to match Roberto Castro at 14 under after another day of perfect conditions in the Coachella Valley. Castro shot a 67 on PGA Wests Arnold Palmer Private Course after they began the round tied for the lead with Jason Kokrak at 63. Hahn followed the eagle with a birdie on the par-5 sixth. "Any time you have back-to-back par 5s that are reachable, its definitely something to look forward to," Hahn said. "Especially if the rounds not going well." Castro had the lead alone at 16 under, but bogeyed two of his last three holes -- three-putting the par-4 ninth. "A couple slipped away there at the end, but yesterday I made a 50-footer on the last," Castro said. "Today, I felt like I hit a good putt and three-putted. So, thats stuff over 72 holes thats going to even out." Hahn opened his rookie season on the tour last week in Hawaii with a tie for 67th in the Sony Open. The 31-year-old South Korean-born American played briefly at the University of California -- "Lets just say extracurricular activities got in the way." -- and won a Web.com Tour event last year. "Im just soaking it in, having a good time," Hahn said. "Any time that I play a good round, it feels good and makes me cherish the momentum a little bit more, because I know theyre few and far between." Castro is in his second season on the tour. The 27-year-old former Georgia Tech player missed the cut last week in Hawaii in his first start of the year. "I learned a lot last year," Castro said. "One of the best things that happened to me was making a lot of the cuts early in the year. I didnt have any big finishes, but I got to play four days and I got to learn pretty quickly. I got to play with some good players and watch what they do." Darron Stiles, Scott Stallings and Richard H. Lee were 13 under, all shooting 65. Stiles and Stallings played at La Quinta, and Lee was on the Palmer course. Kokrak had a 69 on the Nicklaus course to drop into a tie for sixth at 12 under. Phil Mickelson shot a 67 on the Nicklaus course after opening with a 72 at La Quinta. The tournament winner in 2002 and 2004, he was nine strokes behind the leaders and two strokes off the projected cut Saturday. "The last two holes were the first time that I actually hit solid shots and my rhythm felt good and I made good wings," Mickelson said. "Ive been quick from the top. My rhythm has been off and Ive hit a bunch of squirrelly shots. I made a lot of rusty mistakes." Ottawas Brad Fritsch shot 65 on the Nicklaus course to sit at 10 under in a tie for 22nd, while Calgarys Stephen Ames (68) is a shot back in a tie for 33rd after playing La Quinta. David Hearn (66) of Brantford, Ont., is 7 under in a tie for 60th after his round on the Palmer course. Graham DeLaet (70) of Weyburn, Sask., played La Quinta and is in a tie for 120th at 3 under, while Mike Weir (75) of Brights Grove, Ont., is a shot back in a tie for 130th after a disappointing day on the Nicklaus course. The tournament is his first since tying for second in early November in the HSBC Champions in China, the only event he played after the Ryder Cup. He plans to play five or six straight events, a run that will end at Riviera or the Match Play Championship. "I really want to build some momentum here on the West Coast," Mickelson said. Russell Henley, the Sony Open winner Sunday in his first start as a PGA Tour member, had a 69 at the Palmer course to reach 11 under. He shot a 64 on Thursday at the Nicklaus course, and is 35 under in his first six rounds this year. Matt Kuchar, paired with Mickelson, had a 64 -- matching the best round of the day -- to get to 10 under. Hes playing for the third straight week. "It certainly helps playing the last couple of weeks," Kuchar said. "My first week out at the Tournament of Champions there was definitely some rust and lack of scoring. Even if you have been practising, which I was, tournament play is just a little bit different." DIVOTS: The Palmer course had the highest scoring average the first two days at 69.596. There were heated moments the first time the teams met on June 23 in Montreal, a 4-2 Impact victory. It included the sending off of Houston defender Adam Moffat for an attack on midfielder Felipe Martins. The rematch is set for Saturday night in Houston, with both sides needing a win to enhance their Major League Soccer playoff chances. Montreal coach Jesse Marsch sees it as a test of his teams mettle. I expect there to be a lot of emotion in this game, he said this week. It means something for both clubs. The way the last game finished up, there was a lot of emotion in that game, so this one will be a battle, a fight, whatever you want to call it. But well be ready. The Dynamo (8-5-7) have not lost in five games since their visit to Montreal. Houston is 6-0-3 at newly opened BBVA Compass Stadium this season. They have taken the first two games of a three-game homestand, pounding 10-man D.C. United 4-0 on Sunday and edging first-place Kansas City 2-1 on Wednesday night. They are tied for fourth in the Eastern Conference, five points out of first place. Montreal (7-12-3) is 1-9-1 on the road. They are coming off a 2-1 home win over New England that vaulted them to sixth place, although their closest rivals all have games in hand. Their last meeting centred on Houston forward Brian Chings first game against Montreal, the team from which he demanded a trade after he was selected with the first pick in the expansion draft in November. It turned into a rough match, with Ching accusing Nick De Santis of shouting at Moffat in the tunnel as he left the field, which the Montreal sporting director denied. Moffat had taken exception to diving by Felipe, including one that led to Patrice Bernier scoring Montreals fourth goal on a penalty. Ching called De Santis alleged actions unsportsmanlike and said its something well remember when they come and visit us. Marsch relishes the idea of playing a match with some nastiness. As a group, thats what we need, he said.dddddddddddd We need to test ourselves with a challenge like this. Well see where were at. No one should be tested more than Felipe, the clever Brazilian playmaker who has rubbed a few teams the wrong way. They were talking to him, Marsch said. They should try to make it hard on him. Hes one of our best players. Were going to do the same with them. Were going to go down there, keep things tight, and were going to fight. The orange-shirted Dynamo buckled down after the defeat, allowing only two goals in five matches. Theyve also switched to a 4-3-3 formation while adding speedy Honduran winger Boniek Garcia as a designated player. Will Bruin remains their top scoring threat with 10 goals. Montreal also added a DP in Marco Di Vaio, although the former Bologna scoring star is still seeking his first MLS goal. They are a little different, Marsch said of the Dynamo. Theyve got Garcia and now theyve got a bit more mobility in their team. Were going to make a couple of little adjustments. But again, its going to be a mentality game. There will likely be some lineup changes. Collen Warner sat out against New England but should return as a defensive midfielder. Marsch will decide whether to start Swiss newcomer Dennis Iapichino for a second game at left back, or bring Zarek Valentin back into the starting 11. The Impact, who have conceded a league-worst 39 goals, put the focus on defence against New England and it worked except for Lee Nguyens goal on a long shot that hit the crossbar and went in off goalie Donovan Ricketts foot. Another factor is the weather, which is expected to be in the low 30s C. The battle for precious points may raise the temperature a degree or two. I think its going to be an extremely tough game, Valentin said. Knowing their players and their style of team, theyre going to mark it down after that last one. We have to come out with intensity and put together a similar performance (to their last meeting). This is a massive, massive game for us, so weve got to go there with the right attitude. wholesale jerseys china ' ' '

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- From the moment that Ubaldo Jimenez started to warm up in the bullpen, and noticed the run on his fastball, he had a pretty good idea that this night would be unlike any other this season. Any other in quite a while, for that matter. The Indians right-hander baffled the Kansas City Royals while pitching into the eighth inning, Ryan Raburn belted two home runs to pace the Cleveland offence, and the result was a 9-0 win Monday night that salvaged a split of a four-game series. "It felt really good," said Jimenez, who hadnt won in his past 12 starts. "When I saw the run on my fastball, I said, We have to take advantage of that." Jimenez (1-2) certainly did, allowing only two walks and an infield single by Billy Butler over his first seven innings. Along the way, he started to resemble the pitcher who once threw a no-hitter for the Colorado Rockies and earned a spot in the All-Star game. "Youre always looking to be encouraged," Indians manager Terry Francona said, "but we flew right past encouraged and got sideways. ... That was just so much delight tonight." The Royals couldnt have gotten a more different outing from Wade Davis. The right-hander was shelled for the second straight start, this time allowing eight runs and 12 hits and three walks in 4 2-3 innings. Davis (2-2) only last 3 2-3 innings his last time out. "I made some bad decisions and didnt execute," Davis said. The Royals won the first two games of the series, but were outscored 19-3 over the final two, unable to solve spot starter Corey Kluber on Sunday night and baffled by Jimenez on Monday. A former All-Star, Jimenez has struggled mightily over the past couple of years, and hadnt won a game since Aug. 9, 2012. Hed lost his last eight decisions, and had been especially dreadful of late, allowing 18 earned runs in 11 innings over his past three outings. The Royals couldnt solve him, though. Jimenez faced the minimum number of batters through the first three innings, and would have been flirting with another no-hitter had Butler not hit a grounder to the right of shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera with two gone in the fourth. Cabrera was too deep in the hole to throw out Butler at first base, resulting in the Royals only hit until the eighth inning. "Any time you have an outing like Ubaldos," Raburn said, "it makes it all more fun." Jason Kipnis hit his first home run since Sept. 13 with one out in the first for Cleveland, and Michael Brantleys leadoff double and a base hit by Cabrera in the third made it 2-0. Davis kept minimizing the damage until the fifth, when Brantleys one-out double again stirred up trouble. Kipnis walked and Cabrera followed with an RBI double. Mark Reynolds added a two-out base hit, and Carlos Santanas run-scoring double pushed Clevelands lead to 5-0 lead. Royals pitching coach Dave Eiland came out to visit Davis, but it didnt do much good. Raburns three-run shot, his first homer since May 15, 2012, finally chased him from the game. "A tough night. They hit some good pitches off Wade, but they hit some mistakes, too," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Wade wasnt up in the zone, but a lot of the balls they hit were catching a little too much of the plate down." Mike Moustakas doubled leading off the eighth against Jimenez, and a single by Jeff Francoeur finally ended his night. Reliever Nick Hagadone left both runners stranded by retiring three straight batters, though, preserving Jimenezs fine performance. "He threw the ball well," Moustakas said. "He got ahead of us early and mixed his pitches well. Thats a great pitcher out there. His track record speaks for itself. We had an off-day. He was mixing in three or four pitches. He had a good sinker with good action. He was getting ahead 0-1 and putting us in a hole nearly every at-bat." WASHINGTON -- Tony Cingrani started the fourth inning with a strikeout, but the batter reached on a wild pitch. The next hitter doubled, and after striking out Bryce Harper, another batter walked to load the bases. But as he always does, Cingrani kept attacking. With the bases loaded, Cingrani threw only one ball while striking out Ian Desmond and threw only one more ball while striking out Adam LaRoche for the Reds rookies fourth K of the inning. "Thats what I do," Cingrani said. Not usually like that, though. Cingrani struck out a career-high 11 and the Reds beat the Washington Nationals 5-2 Sunday to avoid a four-game sweep. "He threw strikes. He threw near strikes, some tease strikes," Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker said of Cingrani, who allowed two hits in six shutout innings. "He was around the plate." Cingrani joined Joe Nuxhall, Mario Soto, Tim Birtsas and Frankie Rodriguez as the only Reds with a four-strikeout inning. Brandon Phillips had a two-run single as the Reds (14-12) improved to a major league-worst 2-9 on the road. "I cant stress enough, Im just happy to get a win," Baker said. Cingrani also became the first Cincinnati rookie to strike out 10 in a game since Johnny Cueto struck out 10 San Diego Padres on July 22, 2008, and the first left-handed Reds rookie to do so since Dennys Reyes struck out 12 Pittsburgh Pirates on August 20, 1998. "He was good," said Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond, whose team fell to 13-12. "I dont even know. Is he a rookie?" Desmond was told yes. "Yeah, hes got good stuff," Desmond said. Cingrani apparently hasnt caught everyones attention yet, but if he keeps increasing his strikeouts -- eight in his first start, nine in his second and now 11 in his third -- he will soon enough. The Reds, who had one hit in each of the series first two games, found enough offence Sunday to lead from the first inning onward. Cincinnati had four infield singles, and not only did No. 9 hitter Cingrani and No. 8 hitter Corky Miller score after their infield hits, Miller scored on an infield hit by Zack Cozart. "I dont care how we get them, just as long as we get them" Baker said. "You know what I mean? Hits are hard to come by sometimes. Theres no such thing as an ugly hit." Joey Votto provided the Reds only extra-base hit, a first-inning double that set the stage for Phillips two-run single. Washington manager Davey Johnson called Phillips hit starting pitcher Ross Detwilers "biggest mistake." Detwiler (1-2) allowed three earned runs in five innings, and the 11 hits he allowed matched a career high. Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki doubled in the seventh, scoring Desmond. Desmond then doubled in the eighth to score Bryce Harper, who walked in a 10-pitch plate appearance. Aroldis Chapman earned his fifth save in five opportunities. NOTES: Reds RF Jay Bruce, who had hit fifth in each of Cincinnatis first 25 games, dropped to sixth in the lineup. The teams normal No. 6 hitter, 3B Todd Frazier, moved up to fifth. Shoulder surgery meant Saunders had to watch from home as Canadas offence faded at the 2009 tournament. Now healthy and with the team, the Seattle Mariners outfielder hit Canadas lone home run in a 7-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in an exhibition game Tuesday. "Im really excited. Its always fun to see the guys again," said Saunders, who said he welcomed the chance to make his WBC debut with the team he called "a little fraternity." "Whether its WBC or whatever, we feel like we all know each other, we feel like we havent missed a beat and we have great team chemistry and thats something thats going to help us in this tournament," he added. Canada used the game to start working out the kinks with opening-round play set to start Friday against Italy. Saunders said he was impressed with Canadas patience at the plate against the Brewers, with 10 walks and just three strikeouts. "Were going to grind out at-bats for sure," said the Victoria native. "I think on paper we can compete with anybody. Were not coming in a powerhouse, however were not a team to be forgotten about either." A four-run eighth inning provided manager Ernie Whitt and his coaching staff reason to be optimistic moving forward. Trailing 4-3, Canada loaded the bases before centre-fielder Tyson Gillies tied the game with an RBI single. Brewers reliever Michael Gonzalez then walked shortstop Jonathan Malo to score another run. Canada added two more when Jimmy Van Ostrand scored second baseman Pete Orr, and Gillies made it 7-4 after touching home on a wild pitch from Gonzalez. "I think they had good plate appearances and thats what we want," said Whitt. "Again, I look for the three through six hitters and the other guys filling in and doing what they can do to contribute. To me its a pretty good team." Outfielder Khris Davis had Milwaukees lone homer of the game, a deep shot to left-centre field off reliever Andrew Albers that put the Brewers ahead 4-3 in the seventh. While Canadas offence looked good, the pitching is a work in progress. Jameson Taillon, the Pittsburgh Pirates prospect making his WBC debut, gave up two runs and two walks with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Taillon, who was playing with a head cold, will start for Canada against the United States on Sunday. "I think it sets me up well," said Taillon. "Obviously not my best outing. I would have liked to have a bit better results. ... Im definitely a little more gassed with than I usually would be." Shawn Hill, Canadas starter against Italy, was also shaky. Hill walked two batters and hit another to load the basees before Carlos Gomez hit an RBI groundout to tie the game at three.dddddddddddd Albers got the win, giving up the homer and three hits with two strikeouts in two innings. But there were still bright spots in the bullpen. Scott Mathieson pitched 1 1/3 clean innings with two strikeouts. Jim Henderson and closer John Axford, both pitching against their Brewers teammates, kept Milwaukee off the scoreboard through the final two innings. Whitt said he was particularly impressed with Mathiesons outing. "Hes been over in Japan throwing quite a bit, so I mean that helps out Im sure," said Whitt. "But yeah, he was definitely looking like he was a lot farther ahead of the hitters than I expected, so it was nice to see." Canada struck first in the third inning when Milwaukee starter Chris Narveson walked Justin Morneau with the bases loaded. Milwaukee tied the game in the bottom of the inning after Rickie Weeks hit an RBI double then scored on Carlos Gomezs single. That was the fourth straight hit Taillon allowed, knocking him out of the game in favour of Mathieson. After Saunders homer, Tim Smith showed some surprising speed for a designated hitter that paid off in a run to give Canada a 3-2 lead in the fifth. After earning a walk, Smith stole second then took third after an error by Brewers reliever Wily Peralta, who threw wide trying to pick off Smith. Smith scored after Peralta threw a wild pitch on a 3-0 count that Toronto third baseman Brett Lawrie had to dodge, putting Canada back in the lead. "Smittys a good base runner," said Whitt. "They look at him and say hes not that quick, but hes quicker than he looks, he really is." Canada, which wont have Cincinnati slugger Joey Votto in the lineup until Friday, faces the Reds on Wednesday in another opportunity to prepare for the opening round. Spring training results have little meaning to teams -- the loss wont be reflected in Milwaukees Cactus League standings -- but Saunders said it was good for Canada to start from square one with a win. "Exhibition game or not, winnings a mentality," he said. "We come here to play baseball, we dont come here to lose. Whether its exhibition or it means something. I understand its spring training but wed rather walk into the clubhouse with a W than with a loss." Saturday against Cincinnati, it was his fielding that stole the show. Span made pair of impressive catches to halt Reds rallies, Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer and scored twice, and Dan Haren had his best start of the young season as the Nationals beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3. Span and Jayson Werth each had two hits for Washington, which has won the first three games of the four-game set. Harpers two RBIs gave him 18, a Nationals record for April. "(We were) two hits away, had it not been for Span, from tying that game up or even going ahead," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Those were two heck of a plays. Very rarely do you see two Web Gems in one game." Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, the Reds got a two-out RBI single from pinch-hitter Todd Frazier off Tyler Clippard to make it 6-3. Shin-Soo Choo then walked to load the bases and Jack Cozart hit a laser to left-centre, but Spans running catch ended the threat. "I didnt think he had a chance to outrun that ball. He outran it. When (Cozart) hit it, I thought thats going to score three," Washington manager Davey Johnson said. In the sixth, after Choo homered to lead off and Cozart singled, Span thwarted the rally when he raced to the wall in left-centre and made a leaping catch to take at least an extra-base hit away from Joey Votto. "I got a great jump on both of those balls," Span said. "On Votto, I was already playing deep, respecting his power. Im not sure if the ball would have went over, but I was prepared to bring it back if it did go out." Haren (2-3) didnt quite match Jordan Zimmermanns one-hitter and Gio Gonzalezs impressive eight innings of one-hit ball the previous two games, but he was sharp enough. Haren allowed two runs and six hits over six innings. "That was more like him. Hes still throwing with velocity, but he just changes speeds, moves the ball around, pitches," Johnson said. Haren, who was roughed up by Cincinnati for six runs and nine hits in four innings of a 15-0 loss on April 5, lowered his ERA from 7.36 to 6.29 in his longest outing of the year. "I finally feel like part of the team," said Haren, who was signed as a free agent this past off-season.dddddddddddd "Ive got to be like this or better the rest of the year. Theres no excuse for me not to be." Rafael Soriano pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save. Brandon Phillips had three singles for Cincinnati, which has lost four of five. Reds starter Mike Leake (1-1) gave up four runs, three earned, in three innings. The Nationals scored twice in the second. Ian Desmond and Anthony Rendon drew one-out walks. Kurt Suzuki popped out, but Haren blooped a single into short right field scoring Desmond. Rendon went to third and scored when Span singled. Harper and Werth opened the third with singles and, after Adam LaRoche flied out, Desmond singled, scoring Harper. Leake fanned Rendon, but Suzuki hit a grounder toward the hole between third and shortstop. Third baseman Jack Hannahan made a diving stop, but threw wide to second and Werth scored as the ball rolled into right field. The Reds ended a 17-inning scoring drought in the fourth when Votto doubled and Phillips singled him home. Harper, on the one-year anniversary of his callup, put the Nationals ahead 6-1 in the fourth, homering into the Washington bullpen on a 1-2 pitch off Alfredo Simon with Danny Espinosa on first. It was Harpers ninth of the season. "And if you know him, he probably (thinks) hes having an off-year right now," Johnson said of Harper. "He expects lot of himself and thats a good trait." It wasnt hard to see it coming, really. In fact, you knew that this was likely. Still, the revelation is jarring. Tim Finchem announced during Sundays broadcast of the WGC-Accenture Match Play that the PGA Tour is opposing the proposed ban on anchoring putters. The move comes after the PGA Tours players-only meeting at Torrey Pines and the 16-person player advisory council both reportedly came out against the ban. If true, the heat will be turned up considerably on the games two ruling bodies, the USGA and the R&A, which proposed the ban. The PGA of America and the National Golf Club Owners in the United States are also against the anchoring ban, while in Canada the PGA asked the ruling bodies to “seriously consider the impact this proposed ban may have on peoples enjoyment of the game and the overall growth of the game.”But the Tours stand carries with it a ton of weight, a suffocating pressure that will challenge this proposal. As the situation stands now, its hard to imagine the USGA and R&A pressing on with the ban. If they do, it could lead to a complicated set of circumstances with different sets of rules. Imagine if the PGA Tour players had one set of rules for regular tour events and another for the U.S. and British Opens. Of course that wouldnt be unique in sports. International hockey has different rules than the NHL. College baseball in the United States allows aluminum bats, while the majors do not. There are differences between the basketball played in the Olympics and the NBA. And there are already differences in various golf jurisdictions and between professional and amateur rules, although most of those are minor. Adopting the anchoring ban would also give the perception that the R&A and USGA arent listening to the other stakeholders in the game or, it seems, the public. While Ive seen unofficial polls showing support for the ban, Ive yet to see any proper research that indicates any kind of momentum for outlawing the long wands from everyday golfers. At best, the feeling of the public is split or, perhaps more appropriately, indifferent.  That could be an even bigger worry for rules makers. If they start adopting rules that no one follows or even cares about (above and beyond those that are already routinely ignored), it paves the road for irrelevancy. There are certainly other issues that seem more important to the game right now, ones that would connect better with the average golfer – slow play, high prices, access to the tee and junior development. To be sure, the USGA and R&A are in a difficult position. Their next move will be interesting and when the comment period comes to an end next Thursday, I suspect the proposal to ban anchoring may just disappear. Lou Brock Authentic Jersey . ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks are trying to stay upbeat. Yet, they know the playoffs cant keep going like this. Beaten up and blown out in the first two games of their opening-round series against the Indiana Pacers, the Hawks were pondering lineup changes heading into Game 3 Saturday night. Coach Larry Drew said hes looking for improvement at both ends of the court, but its clear that hes mainly concerned about getting tougher defensively. The Pacers averaged 110 points in taking a 2-0 lead in Indianapolis. Their average margin of victory was a comfortable 16 points. "We may look to change the lineup a little bit," Drew said Friday. "Its about adjustments. Weve done some good things in the first couple of games, but there are some things we need to do better. Some changes may push us over the edge in that respect." The Pacers have a huge size advantage, and theyve taken full advantage of it so far. The Hawks had no answer for Paul George, who put up a triple-double (23 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists) in the series opener, then added 27 points in Game 2. With Atlanta focused on trying to stop George, David West and big centre Roy Hibbert, guard George Hill has turned out to be another big weapon for the Pacers. Hes averaging 20 points in the series. "When they kick it out, hes knocking down shots," Hawks guard Jeff Teague said. "Hes killing us." Atlanta doesnt have a lot of options on the inside, especially after rugged centre Zaza Pachulia went down with an Achilles injury late in the regular season. Drews most likely option is to go with little-used 7-footer Johan Petro at centre, which would have the ripple effect of moving Al Horford to power forward and Josh Smith to small forward, allowing 3-point specialist Kyle Korver to come off the bench. But its not like Petro is suddenly going to become an All-Star-calibre player. Sure, hes got size, but theres a reason he played only 31 games during the season. "Certainly, minus Zaza, that kind of puts us behind the eight-ball," Drew said. "But I feel confident we can match up. We have ability to go big. We have ability to go small. The first couple of games, we played a lot of small. We tried to utilize our speed and our quickness. Now we may change a little bit. " Teague conceded that Pachulia would have been a valuable weapon against a team such as Pacers. "Zaza brings a physicality to the game," Teague said. "I dont think too many people in the locker room bring that. But we just have to take a piece of what he does on the floor and implement it in our game. Petro is going to come in and play big for us." Indiana certainly has no intention to change the way its playing. The Pacers manhandled Atlanta on their home court, and they hope to do the same in a building where they havent had much success in recent years. Indiana has lost its last 11 games at Philips Arena. "We havent won down there for a couple of years, so whats a better time to change it than playoff time?" Hibbert said. "We know we have to get at least a split down there. Our mindset is to get both." George promised a different Pacers team than the one thats struggled so much in Atlanta. They plan to stick with the bruising style thats worked so well in this series, most notably creating a huge disparity in free throws. Indiana is 51 of 63 at the foul line, while Atlanta is just 18 of 34. "Were real confident," George said. "Physicality is our brand of basketball and thats how we play. Well step up to the occasion." Hill and fellow guard Lance Stephenson sat out part of the practice Friday in Indianapolis before the Pacers flew to Atlanta. But they are merely nursing minor ailments, nothing that was expected to keep them out of Game 3, coach Frank Vogel said. For Indiana, this is a chance to gain a stranglehold on the best-of-seven series. "We dont think about losing or a team coming back on us," George said. "We just want to keep our foot on the gas." MUNICH, Germany -- Mario Gomez needed nine minutes to score a hat trick after coming on as a late substitute Tuesday in a 6-1 win over Wolfsburg that put Bayern Munich into the German Cup final for the 19th time. Xherdan Shaqiri had a role in three goals and scored one himself, with other goals coming from Arjen Robben and Mario Mandzukic. Diego scored shortly before halftime for Wolfsburg, which conceded four goals after the break. Bayern stayed on course for a domestic double after securing the Bundesliga championship 10 days ago. Next week, Bayern hosts Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals. "It was a good win against a strong opponent, for a long time they made it difficult for us," Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said. "I really want to win this title." Heynckes lost the final twice as coach, once with Borussia Moenchengladbach and last year with Bayern against Borussia Dortmund. Gomez came on for Mandzukic in the 77th minute and had scored his three goals by the 86th. Bayern will play either Stuttgart or Freiburg, who meet Wednesday. The final is June 1 in Berlin. Since Bayern is already sure to play in the Champions League as the Bundesliga champion, the other finalist will be in the Europa League. Shaqiri released Robben in the 17th after a Wolfsburg error and Robben squared the ball to Mandzukic for Bayerns first goal following a lightning-quick move that ended with Mandzukic slamming it into the roof of the net. After another Wolfsburg error, Shaqiri won the ball and played it through for Robben to double the lead in the 35th. Diego reduced the lead in the 45th, with a superb shot from the edge of the penalty area. Shaqiri ended Wolfsburgs hopes of a comeback by scoring from 16 metres (yards) after a corner. Shaqiri also created Gomez first goal, although the midfielder could have scored himself but passed the ball two the open Gomez in the 80th. Gomez then scored in the 83rd and 86th, both times after receiving through balls from Bastian Schweinsteiger. Womens Adrian Peterson Elite Jersey . U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson gave the players an early victory Monday in their fight with the owners over how to divide the US$9 billion business, granting their injunction request to lift the lockout.LONG BEACH, Calif. -- With an Olympic berth on the line, Canada opened the mens NORCECA volleyball qualifying tournament Monday with a convincing 25-21, 25-13, 25 -15 win over the Dominican Republic. Coach Glenn Hoag said the Canadian team performed well, although Gord Perrin from Creston, B.C., hurt his back and his status for the next few games is uncertain. "I thought the guys played a good match," Hoag said after the win. "The Dominican Republic is a weaker team and usually its difficult to keep your focus." The NORCECA region covers North America, Central America and the Caribbean, with Cuba and the United States the teams to beat if Canada wants to qualify for the London Games. "We started slowly but we picked up our pace and set up our block defence and it looked good," said Hoag. "We need to work on our serving a little and our setter-hitter relationship, but thats mainly due to spacial orientation in this big, big gym." Saskatoons Gavin Schmitt scored 12 points for Canada against the 46th-ranked Dominicans. Canada, ranked 18th in the world, plays No. 17 Puerto Rico on Tuesday. "Theyre a much better team obviously, more experienced and play a much faster game," Hoag added. "(But) Im prettyy confident.dddddddddddd We beat them last summer twice." The tournament runs through Saturday. Dan Lewis said the Canadian team knows it has reached a level where it can compete with some of the best. A Canadian mens team hasnt played at the Olympics since the 1992 Games in Barcelona. "Today we looked a little but nervous at the start. Everybody knows which matches are the big matches," said Lewis. "The team over the last two years has really come together under Glenns leadership. "Our level is there and its really the last mental part, where youve got to put it together at the right time." To do that, he says they have to make the stress work for them rather than against them, and not focus on the result theyre trying to achieve. "If youre worrying about the result youre not focusing on the play and if you dont focus on the play, youre going to lose." He says he knows what he has to deal with stress and make it work for him. "Youve got to accept it and just know its there and youve got to funnel it to your intensity and in your favour. If we can do that as a group, were going to win this tournament." Canadas womens team failed to qualify for the Olympics at a tournament last week. wholesale jerseys china ' ' '
