From Military Hopeful to Male Model: Mitchell Slaggert’s Wild Ride
Though he made a big impression this season as a Calvin Klein exclusive, Mitchell Slaggert never considered fashion as a viable career path. “I come from a military family, so I never thought I would do this,” the Georgia native tells Style.com. “It’s still a little weird to think of myself as a model.” Originally intending to follow in the footsteps of his Marine Corps vet mother, Slaggert was prevented by a medical issue from enlisting. Instead, he focused on studying mechanical engineering, until chance brought him face-to-face with casting director Daniel Peddle. Peddle—who discovered another Southern star by the name of Jennifer Lawrence—approached Slaggert as he was heading home from class. “I was raised to believe that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is, so when he came up to me, I said, ‘No, thanks,’” Slaggert admitted. “It wasn’t until I looked him up on the Internet and realized he was legit that I gave him a call back.”

The fateful call led to Slaggert being signed to DNA Models in New York. Quickly after, he was tapped for Calvin Klein’s Spring 2016 menswear show. At 6'2" with an athletic build and easygoing nature, Slaggert epitomizes that clean-cut Calvin look. The trip to Milan for the brand’s Spring 2016 show provided Slaggert with a series of firsts: his first trip to Europe, his first runway show, and his first time seeing the intricacies of fashion’s backstage scene. “There are a lot of interesting characters in this industry, I think that has been the most overwhelming and surprising part of working in fashion,” he offered. “But it’s great to see people who really express themselves!”
With one big-time show under his belt, Slaggert’s catwalk future looks bright. And even though he dedicates his free time to finishing up his degree, he still manages to find time to immerse himself in the perks of his new career. “Since I started, I’ve had to get a whole new wardrobe—can’t show up to castings in my Browning shirts!”
