SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- A truck driver delivering newspapers for The Times of Trenton was killed in an accident on Route 1 in South Brunswick early Wednesday morning.
Police said the driver, believed to be in his 40s, has not been identified.
The Times newspaper truck was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer while heading south on Route 1 at about 3 a.m., said Detective Jim Ryan of the South Brunswick police. The cause of the accident was unknown, he said.
The collision with the tractor-trailer forced the newspaper truck into an utility pole. The tractor- trailer then skidded into a culvert, but driver escaped injury, Ryan said.
Police would not identify the driver of the tractor-trailer.
The crash near Raymond Road is causing traffic congestion.Only one lane is open near the scene of the accident. Raymond Road remains closed between Routes 1 and 27. At midmorning Wednesday, traffic was backed up more than a mile from the accident scene, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
