EnlightenedOsote's blog: "MUSIC"

created on 06/24/2007  |  http://fubar.com/music/b94970
Interview mit Dennis Rowehl: D.R.: Can you give us a short summary of your musical career so far? Fluffy: Huh? I was born to rock! Really. I came out giving the devil horns and had a synthesizer in my other hand. You can imagine how shocked my mother was! Seriously, I started making this music by myself, a few years ago. Not wanting to rely on anybody or wait for people to get their priorities together, I just started working on my own, writing songs ... and then producing my own stuff. I just sat down and taught myself. A friend convinced me to put some of it online on a big music site, and I started getting lots of fans instantly and my stuff shot up the charts. I was totally stunned! But amused, so I pushed the envelope even further and recruited other musicians who are crazy enough to join in the madness of creating songs and playing live shows with me. I just released my CD on Halloween 2007, called "Come On!" And the rest is history, still waiting to be written. D.R.: You integrate different directions of music (from Metal to Pop). How would you describe your style? Fluffy: I realize, my music doesn't really fall into any particular category, but I call it Electronic Rock. I think itís what music should sound like in the future because it blends many unexpected elements that arenít normally present together. It's like a candy with a razor blade in the center. People just have to hear it to understand what I mean. My imagination is very vivid and I write novels, too, so I don't adhere to any rules for my music. I just create what I think sounds cool. That's the only rule. Who cares if it's right or wrong? I don't know any better anyway. D.R.: You're from Vancouver. Regarding to the entertainment business Canada is something like the little sister of the USA. Is it harder for a Canadian artist to be successful in the States? Fluffy: Yes, I think the two countries are like brother and sister. Because when I go to America, I forget I'm not in Canada. It's the same. Everybody looks the same and talks the same. I am told that it is harder for Canadian artists to break in America. But then I see bands like Nickelback and Avril Lavigne. Celine Dion. All Canadian. And so many more through the years, in every genre. Skinny Puppy. See what I mean? I think the possibilites are infinite. You just never know who will like what. My CD sales come from mostly America, next is Europe. And last is my own country. I'm not sure why that is but I think globally, so it doesn't matter. It's just wicked that people like it, no matter who or where they are. That is great. D.R.: You released your album in America without a label. What are the advantages for an artist working alone? Fluffy: After being involved for a few years on and off with labels and industry people, I decided it would be best for me to release my record myself, online. So that means I released the record globally. Not in any particular country. But these days, with the internet, independant artists have so many possibilities that they never had in the past. It's a great time for us! You know why? Because 100% of the power is now in our hands. How you want to sound. How you want to look. What you want to say in public and on interviews, like this one. You get to be yourself. I love that! That is the major advantage, for me. But also, it's a lot harder doing it this way. Because youíre just one person doing so much work! And you donít have millions to spend on advertising and things. But I am lucky to have awesome friends who have helped me with my music and my artwork and my website etc. That has helped me tremendously. I don't know what the future will hold for Fluffy Starr. But I know I'm not going to stop anytime soon. And nobody can make me. This is only the beginning. More info: www.fluffystarr.com
