Saturday night I had the pleasure of seeing the band Rush in concert for the first time. To say it was a truly spiritual experience for me is not even doing it the total justice it deserves. It was AMAZING and as near to NIRVANA as I have been.
Though I enjoy several different forms of music, I am a huge fan of drummers - power drummers to be more exact. It amazes me the skill it takes to play the drums well and since one of my best friends is a drummer - I have been fortunate enough to be able to watch a skilled drummer behind the variety of drums, cymbals, cow bells, etc. and no matter how many times I watch the drums being played - it still truly captivates me.
I was pleasantly surprised when my friends and I arrived at our seats to find that I was directly in front of the drum kit though several rows back but close enough to see clearly without squinting. I told my best buddy John (who is the drummer I speak of above) that I will never be able to go to another Rush concert without as good a seat or better ..... though I doubt Neil would allow John and I our "dream seats".
The entire concert was fantastic, the stage show was amazing and Geddy and Alex were both excellent (Geddy's voice in great tune and tone and Alex with his fingers burning up the strings on his guitars) but to be honest - my eyes rarely left my view of Neil and his drums. To say that Neil is a great drummer is an understatement .... and though from reading 3 of Neil's 4 books also; I know he is his own worst critic when it comes to his own performances - I will say that his playing Saturday night for this fan's first live Rush concert ever that he did not disappoint me. As for his drum solo - OMG I cannot truly tell you how I felt listening to the solo and seeing him perform it live in front of me.
Neil, Geddy and Alex - thank you for a truly truly mind boggling, spiritual soul uplifting experience for this Rush fan. Here's to hoping Rush continues to tour and that I will see them in future years when they come to the Chicago ..... ROCK ON!!!!
