KHADI CALLING

The fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) has always supported unique traditional fashion, and it has already taken the next step with a unique collaboration with the Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries Board (GSKVIB). At an eclectic fashion show held in Ahmedabad, designers Rohit Bal, Anamika Khanna and Rajesh Pratap Singh showcased their collections using hand-spun fabrics. Celebs likeSonam Kapoor and Chitrangada Singh were the showstoppers, and we're hoping that there will be more heritage crafstmanship to see at the upcoming India Fashion Week Autumn-Winter '15 that is scheduled for March 25-29, 2015, at the Pragati Maidan in the Capital.

COURTING COUTURE IN PARIS

Haute Couture Week spring/summer 2015 has been a pleasant surprise for many as it left intricately crafted dresses behind, and decidedly moved on to experimenting with unique styles in luxe fabrics. While questions rose as to whether the lack of frills comprise 'haute couture' in the true sense of the term, this year's ateliers have shown that there is more to the runway than elaborate, cascading gowns. A tweak here, an extra flounce there was the norm, and artinspired catwalks set the stage for the designs.

Donatella Versace opened the show by amping up the sex-appeal (which the label is known for), through fitted gowns with risque cut-out panels. '90s supermodels Eva Herzigova and Amber Valletta scorched the ramps alongside model Karlie Kloss at the show. Meanwhile, Karl Lagerfeld brought the outdoors in with a garden-inspired theme for Chanel, complete with 300 enginepowered paper flowers unfolding while the models walked. Origamiinspired flowers, tweed fringe tassels, short tops and jackets, and delicate beadwork added a youthful flavour to the venerated luxury label. French luxury label Dior took inspiration from '50s, '60s and '70s, and Raf Simons re-interpreted the decades with über cool sensibilities for 2015.

Printed plastic overcoats, knee-high vinyl boots, body-fitted jumpsuits with geometric prints, and beautiful pleated skirts with horizontal stripes formed part of the playful range.

BANARAS WEAVES

The cocktails afternoon was held at Cavalli cafe, Emporio Mall, where guests were treated to pure handloom tussar, Banarasi silk and jute net materials embellished with Parsi gara, zardozi and kalamkari detailing. The range starts at Rs.40,000 and is available at the GK-1, M Block store

CURATED LUXURY

Designer label Abraham & Thakore hosted a special evening of carefully curated jewellery, art and fashion creations at Moon River last week. The display saw handpicked gemstones from Chennaibased label 'Studio Tara by Bharathi Raviprakash', which included precious stones like untreated rubies, opals, onyx, amethyst and quartz in smoky colours, alongside artist commissioned chessboards by Sharan Apparao of Apparao Galleries.

The exhibit also presented A&T's signature black-and-white collection made with natural fibres and details like hand embroidery, block printing and different types of surface texturing. The travelling show will next be on display in Bangalore on February 26 at the A&T store, The Leela Palace's The Colonnade.

HOLA INDIA!

Spanish luxury apparel brand Custo Barcelona, which has been worn by international divas Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Beyonce and Shakira, made a colourful entry in India with a fashion show at Waves City Centre, Noida, recently. The spring/summer '15 collection was vibrant and playful, with geometric patterns and stripes on a capsule range of dresses, jackets, swimwear, shorts and jumpsuits. Speaking to Lifestyle, the designer stated, "Indian and Spanish cultures are both very colourful and celebratory, and the collection reflects this shared liveliness. Vivid tones and gold accents make them perfect for the Indian wearer." The collection starts at Rs.5,000, and will be available at Emporio mall from April onwards.
