As I sit my mind heavy and tired,
Long days work done…. relax time expired.
Wishing for sleep to come furious and fast,
The fatigue in my bones just cannot last.
I am so tired but cannot sleep,
I hear this quiet peep peep peep.
I look around but nothing to see,
Why does this disease seem to only plague me?
To the left I look and then the right,
The illuminated numbers tell me it’s night.
As the cascade of dawn filters out the black,
I turn to my side to receive a light smack.
Time to wake up says my beautiful wife,
Have to go to work to pay for this life.
Falling asleep happened when I don’t know,
Off to work none the less I must go.
The kids, the wife, the house and the car,
These are the things that make me go so far.
All I need are those smiling faces,
To take me to the best possible places.
Then it happens right out of the blue,
When I woke up the sky had a strange hue.
Not black not grey not blue not red,
Have I succumbed? am I finally dead?
In this daze I let it take me,
Down down down please family forsake me.
All is quiet and so serene,
Smash crash boom and then a scream.
I jumped right up and down the hall,
What was happening I tried to call.
My voice had frozen as I saw the mirror,
The reflection I saw was me only fairer.
I looked very healthy and was growing a beard,
Most unusual… this is getting quite weird.
All the havoc had stopped when I did,
The wife was smiling as well as the kids.
I asked the time knowing full well I was late,
They said 6 o’clock while shutting the gate.
I asked for the date which came as a shock,
It seems I’ve been sleeping 3 days round the clock.
I asked why they didn’t wake me and this I was told,
“ My daddy’s just tired, he’s not getting old.
We’ll let him sleep until he wakes up,
Feeling full of energy like a frisky little pup.”
“ We had some worries and were a little scared,
But mom said daddy needed sleep like the bears.”
I still have long days and most are the same,
But it is all worth it.. when they call my name.
This is what it all means to me,
To have what I wish… my FAMILY.
