Carbon Monoxide and Nicole's Law What is carbon monoxide (CO)? Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, odorless, colorless, tasteless gas which is produced whenever any fuel, such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, pellets, or charcoal is burned. What is Nicole's Law? On November 4, 2005, Governor Romney signed gNicolefs Lawh, named after 7-year old Nicole Garofalo who died on January 28, 2005 when her Plymouth home was filled with deadly amounts of carbon monoxide on January 24. The furnace vents had been blocked by snow during a power outage. This new law requires carbon monoxide detectors in all residential buildings by March 31, 2006. I own a single family home in Plympton, what does this mean to me? You are required by this law to install by March 31, 2006 carbon monoxide detectors in your home if you have fossil fuel burning equipment such as an oil burner, propane, natural gas, a wood, pellet, or coal stove. These fuels maybe used for a variety of purposes such as heating, cooking, or hot water within your home. Also if you have an enclosed garage you are required to install carbon monoxide detectors. The only type of homes which would not require carbon monoxide detectors would be if you did not have enclosed vehicle parking and you had electric heat, an electric hot water heater, and an electric cooking stove. Where do I install these detectors? Why type should I buy? Although we can not endorse any particular product or model the law defines a carbon monoxide alarm as: - Battery powered with battery monitoring chirp indicator (includes wireless battery) - Plug in with battery back up - NOT ALLOWED on outlets controlled by a switch. - AC (hard wired) with battery back up. - Low voltage or wireless systems. - Qualified combination smoke CO units which have a voice to define between smoke and CO incidents The law states a single station carbon monoxide alarm shall be located in each level of each dwelling unit including habitable portions of basements, cellars, and attics, but not including crawl spaces. The method of installation of the unit shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. When mounting a carbon monoxide alarm on a level of a dwelling unit with a sleeping area, the alarm shall be installed in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping area, not to exceed 10 ft. as measured in any direction from any bedroom door. I am selling my house after March 31, 2006 what does all this mean to me? When the fire department comes to inspect your smoke detectors they will be required by law to also inspect for carbon monoxide alarms and their proper placement. The fee for this inspection of both smoke and CO alarms is $50.00 I haven't been feeling well, what are the signs and symptoms of CO poisoning? CO enters the lungs and blood where it competes with oxygen normally carried by red blood cells. CO attaches to the cells 200 times easier than oxygen. Without oxygen cells begin to die. Exposure to carbon monoxide can produce flu-like symptoms such as: ¡ Headache ¡ Confusion ¡ Nausea ¡ Fainting ¡ Dizziness ¡ Unconsciousness and eventually death If you suspect a CO exposure get out of the house and get fresh air. Call the fire department from a neighbor's house and if you have symptoms seek medical help immediately.
