What never ceases to amaze me about the United States is its government's seemingly uncaring policy about our future. As a government, it seems, especially under the Republicans, more concerned about taking care of big business. Yes, I know all about laissez-faire and the business of America is business, but come on! We have the capability of being so much more than just a consumer nation. Right now, the service industry accounts for over 70% of our economy. That means that 7 out of 10 people are all about taking care of the needs of other people in terms of fast food, tourism, and the like. What happened to our nation of industry? I know, Made in China.
What gets me is that we could potential be the first nation to tackle the energy crisis by producing more energy than we consume. Not in terms of oil or gas, but in renewable. We are about the only truely stable nation at the moment with the means to do so. We have large states that get nothing but sunlight all year long and could produce an incredible amount of solar energy, not just in terms of your typical solar panels, but also in terms of concentrating collector with Stirling engines, solar updraft towers, and solar ponds just to name a few. We can have wind farms on and off-shore and even sea turbines such as the ones going into the Hudson River. Yet, our politicians hem and haw over patches to our energy needs not fixes. It is sickening and we are letting them do it. Not my problem is the befuddled masses' refrain or I got mine is the attitude. Boo on us!
