Drive By Shooting Update

The body count in the bloody war between two rival gangs jumped yesterday after a drive-by shooting in Dover left one man dead and two others injured. The hail of gunfire erupted about 2 p.m., bullets fired from a green minivan with tinted windows into a Dodge Durango as both travelled north on 26 St. S.E. between Peigan Tr. and Dover Ridge Dr. This is the second fatal shooting this year in the war between the Fresh off the Boat and Fresh off the Boat Killers gangs, also responsible for the triple murder Jan. 1 at a south-side restaurant. Organized Crime Staff Sgt. Gord Eiriksson said the daylight shooting is another example of gangsters' reckless disregard for innocent people. "It's very unfortunate they've once again taken this to the streets," he said. "Here's a busy street, middle of the afternoon, shots being fired, one vehicle careens off and crashes through a fence. "Kids could've been playing in the yard, people could've been driving, there could've been a head-on collision and more people could've been hurt or killed. "It's almost on a daily basis someone is being shot or killed -- it's intolerable," he added. As the minivan fled, he bullet-riddled Durango, one of its occupants slain, lost control, drifting across at least two lanes before crashing into the rear fence of a Doverglen Cres. home, coming to rest beside a small garden shed and feet from a deck. Police last night could not update the status of the other gunshot victims and whether they survived but sources said both were taken to hospital with critical injuries, one shot in the temple and the chest. At least 16 shell casings were marked by orange pylons at yesterday's scene where up to two dozen police officers looked for evidence as HAWCS flew overhead. Shaken witnesses, many filling their cars with gas at a nearby station when violence erupted, gathered at an adjacent strip mall. Laura, who declined to give her last name, called 911 after seeing the terrifying spectacle, adding she heard as many as eight gunshots. "I thought it was fireworks at first," she said, visibly shaken. "It makes me think I want to get out of Calgary." Brett Barclay was walking to a bus stop when he watched in horror as shots rang out between two vehicles travelling side by side. "I know Calgary's reputation for gang violence ... but you never think you'd actually witness it, especially at two o'clock in the afternoon," the 20-year-old said, adding the minivan bolted from the carnage at speeds approaching 100 km/h. Police could not confirm whether people in the SUV had opened fire but they were keeping tabs on hospitals in case another victim came in. About 2 km northeast of the crime scene, police taped off a section of Cottonwood Cres. S.E. where a witness saw three Asian men flee from a neatly-parked grey Plymouth Voyager minivan and pile into another vehicle soon after the shooting. Sgt. Mike Lomore said police were investigating that van's link to the gunplay. The victim is the city's fifth homicide this year.
