Fatal shooting in northeast
Neighbours watch in horror as man gunned down on residential street on his way to a barbecue
Witnesses watched in stunned horror as a man was slain in a drive-by shooting apparently launched by two masked assailants in a northeast neighbourhood yesterday.
The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was gunned down around 6 p.m.
He was pronounced dead at the scene after being felled by multiple bullet wounds on the front lawn of a home on Marcombe Dr. N.E.
Distraught friends of the murdered man, whose first name they said was Kevin, said he was walking up to the house for a barbecue when he was shot.
Eyewitnesses said the masked occupants of a dark-coloured vehicle drove by and opened fire.
Friends and neighbours rushed to the fallen man's aid as the car, which witnesses added had tinted windows, sped away.
An area resident named Michelle, who didn't give her last name, heard multiple shots as she was preparing dinner and rushed outside to provide aid to the victim.
"I ran down there and tried to give him CPR ... it's hard to get it out of my head, looking into his eyes I knew it was too late," she said.
She added concerned friends of the victim were outside of the home, many of them screaming, "Oh my God, my friend was shot."
Michelle added she saw a man, whom she believed was another friend of the victim's, rush out of the house brandishing a gun.
Another witness, Andrew Malmloff, said he saw the dark-coloured car sitting outside the home where the victim was felled.
Shortly thereafter he heard what he thought were six or seven gunshots.
"I looked back and saw a guy on the ground -- he got hit in the face at least once," said Malmloff.
"A guy ran out with a gun and pointed it at the car."
Cops said the man who rushed out of the house with gun in hand is believed to be a friend of the victim.
They would not confirm his whereabouts.
Insp. Victor Trickett said the gang unit had been notified of the slaying and would assist the homicide unit.
He added such gunplay on city streets is hugely concerning.
"It's even more alarming when it occurs in a residential area and obviously the inherent dangers that go with it," said Trickett.
The slaying is Calgary's 22nd homicide of the year
this just stuns me as it was only on the corner of my house and it terrifies me as there is always little children out playing in the area it not only concerns me it concerns parents about the safety of their children.
