KENNER, La. -- An infant just minutes old was found dead in Lake Pontchartrain on Tuesday afternoon, thrown there by a woman believed to be its mother, a police spokesman said.
Kenner Police Lt. Wayne McInnis told WDSU that officers believe a woman gave birth to the child and threw it into the water.
The baby girl's body was recovered at the Kenner Boat Launch just after 2 p.m. Her umbilical cord was still attached, McInnis said.
Witnesses told police they saw a woman get out of a car at the boat launch, toss the baby into the water and drive off.
Police said they are looking for a black female, about 5-foot-3, thin, driving a bright red Pontiac Grand Am with a temporary tag in the back window.
