No, this isn't about self-esteem. I probably have an adequate number of both positive and negative opinions of myself.
This is about what's said IN confidence.
People can tell me whatever they feel like telling me. I don't care if it's solely a serious discussion, or a casual conversation with passing remarks of a serious nature: I'm a pretty good judge of what I can repeat and what I should keep the fuck to myself.
Just over a month ago, in a regular, day-to-day, friendly conversation, the topic of work was brought up. Not by me, mind you. I try to stay as far away from that subject as I can get. Basically, in a polite response to a question about how work was going, I mentioned how work had become ridiculously stressful.. and if things didn't get better in our territory soon, the thought of asking for a demotion had crossed my mind. Mistake! That comment came back to haunt me more than four weeks later, and I had to spend valuable time I didn't really have this morning to explain why I would never step down without professionally discussing the matter first, giving a proper notice, and training my replacement.
Ugh.
Note to self: Your friend is either no longer your friend once you start working for the same company as her husband, or your friend is too much of an idiot to make any kind of hypothetical comments to, even in passing. Gravity will always be a bitch when the shit comes raining down from the fan it hits.
