Okay, people. We need to have a serious discussion, here.
Many people ask me why I’m so anal-retentive about typos, misspellings, etc. They think it’s because of some arrogance or pedantic sadism that I am such a stickler but, that is not it.
Especially on a site like Fubar, the written word is all we have and communicating properly is essential (especially for all of us that are looking to find “the one”, here). We don’t have the sound of the other person’s voice (initially) to judge whether the thought being communicated is meant as a joke or not (and “lol” and “roflmao” have been so over-used that I doubt if anyone is really laughing, when they type those things).
So, as I frequently do, allow me to be of help …
1. If you are comparing two items, one of them can be bigger than the other. Conversely, if you’re giving a chronological list of things or events, you like movies then, television.
2. If you wish to compare your age to someone else’s, then (ha!), “They are older than I” is correct and “They are younger than me” is incorrect (When in doubt with these two words, add the word “am” after the word and see which sounds right)
3. “Their” means something belongs to someone.
4. “There” means “not here”.
5. “They’re” means “they are”.
6. While we’re on apostrophes … “we’re” means “we are” and “were” indicates something that happened in the past.
7. The correct punctuation for how Southerners say “You all” is: “Y’all” because it’s the “o” and the “u” that are missing; NOT anything between the “a” and the double “l”
8. “Where” signifies location (see Item 6).
9. If I say “Thank you” to you and you want to be courteous in return, the response is “You’re welcome”. Which means “You are welcome”. If you tell me: “Your welcome” it tells me that one of my welcomes is running around out there, loose. If your instinct tells you to type “ur welcome” please don’t even approach me!
10. While I understand that we’re communicating in text, if you are in the habit of using “text speak”, please pass me by, also.
Look, I know that I make mistakes and the occasional mistake is absolutely acceptable but, when people exhibit laziness or apathy, you have to wonder if their heart is really in what they’re doing (how’s that for setting an example?).
