More "Other Guys"

I sort of did this in my "Other Guys" Post but I would add: “These "Other 11" [Note for non football fans: I promise this will be one of the last, if not the last of my Football posts at least until much later in the season.] [Note for REAL football fans if you want more of my brilliant insight, visit: www.condraft.com] The Consensus Draft Service Marcel Frost is a celebrated recruit who transferred with Eric Haw from Ohio State. Frost broke his left leg on one of the final plays of Jackson State's spring game and the recovery has been slow and painful. Frost was cleared to take his brace off and run on the leg a few weeks ago, but getting in game shape may take longer; reportedly he's aiming for the Sept. 13 Southwestern Athletic Conference opener against Texas Southern as a realistic goal. Frost is prototypical in terms of size and 6 ft. 4.3 in 256 and runs about 4.8 he was originally projected to DE. Frost is a talented athlete with all the physical tools, however there are some health and character questions, but a big year puts him in the 5th round. http://condraft.com/database/southwe...ost/index.html Staying with JSU's receiving corps: Jaymar Johnson is 5'11.3 183" 4.41 [Est.] [Think a rawer Anthony Miller] and he shares balls with Chasio Thomas 6'0.7 204 4.48 [think a rawer Eric Moulds] and former Hinds JC Standout Terrence Jones 5'11.2" 199 4.46 [Think a faster Josh Reed] 1 could be drafted and 2 could be UDFAs, however JSU's 2 QB system and inconsistent O-Line might prevent their talents from shining. JSU TB Eric Haw who transferred with Frost 5'11.6" 215 despite sub 4.4 rumors he looks more like 4.48 to me and is better between the tackles, but he has good wiggle and decent hands. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Tennessee State CB 6'1" 181 4.43 is probably the top CB prospect in the HBCU ranks, he has good speed and hips, he needs to get stronger but otherwise solid could be a nickel nearly right away, [think of a taller Chris Cash]. Edward Williams of Lane College WR 6'2.6 206 4.59 is not lightning quick like last years Jacoby Jones, [think Mushin Muhammad] but is a very good all around receiver with good hands and he blocks downfield. Henti Baird Hampton University SS 6'0.5" 204 4.47 a strong safety-455lb squat, who could play FS, explosive- 40 inch Vert, can cover the slot, but hit like a LB he has close to Coy Wire’s upside and versatility. Marcus Dixon Hampton University DE 6-4, 299 5.12 Dixon has a very good chance at the next level but will likely move inside to DT, he’s like a “Poor Man’s” Marcus Spears Johnathan Harris Tuskegee University CB 5-10, 182 4.48 a little like Phillip Buchanon Zach East a John Mobley type, run and hit linebacker, at 6'0.6" 237 he could play inside in the right system or "Will." Brian Witherspoon Stillman College CB 5'9.3" 163 4.41 to small to be an every down CB but he is cat quick and can cover in the slot he's a lot like former Fresno State CB Tierre Sams.

Tight Ends

Other Guys" TEs: Craig Stevens Cal-Berkley 6'3.7" 253 Estimated 40 Time: 4.78 Craig Stevens is not spectacular in any area, however he is tough, dependable, consistant and has no holes in his game. His hands, blocking, route running and toughness are all above average. He could be a 10 year pro. Career Totals 37 games-20 34 465 13.7 4 29 Think Chad Lewis. #2Chris Hopkins, Toledo 6'3.5" Weight: 252 Estimated 40 Time: 4.81 Chris Hopkins has a very nice blend of attributes He's productive (54 receptions, 565 yards, 7 touchdowns in 2006). And he has great character. Hopkins produced against good competition recording 13 receptions and three TDs at Iowa State. The southside native of Chicago has soft hands and is shifty for his size. He was very productive in 2006 with 54 grabs for 565 yards 10.5 ypc 7TDs and a long catch of 42 yards. Think Randy MacMichael. #3 Joey Haynos, Maryland 6'7" Weight: 262 Estimated 40 Time: 4.87 Vernon Davis' super sized replacement at Maryland caught 37 passes for 369 yards and 3 touchdowns last year. He is a solid blocker and still developing as a receiving threat. Vernon Davis' super sized replacement at Maryland caught 37 passes for 369 yards and 3 touchdowns last year. He was a preseason second team All-ACC choice by Athlon and Lindy's. The native of Rockville, Md., has played in 30 career games after walking on in 2003. He was the second-leading receiver on the team in 2006 with 37 receptions for 369 yards, both career highs. Haynos earned the team's most improved offensive player award in 2006. Haynos will be on the Mackey Award Watch List: Haynos was an honorable mention All-ACC selection last season . He will likely contend for all-league honors this . He is a solid blocker and still developing as a receiving threat. Think Leonard Pope.Think Leonard Pope. #4 Adam Bishop, Nevada Height: 6'4.1" Weight: 244 40 Time: 4.76 A hip injury ruined his 2006 season and he was limited to 11 receptions for 129 yards an 11.7 average and 1TD This could be a bounce back year that could make him a hot property. If Adam Bishop can rebound with a solid year stay healthy and runs a fast time he could be a late rising prospect. Think Jeb Putzier. #5 Tom Santi, Virginia Height: 6'4.3" Weight: 251 Estimated 40 Time: 4.79 Santi has NFL size and speed but disappears at times caught seven passes against Pittsburgh and Western Michigan, but only one versus Wyoming, Georgia Tech and Duke. Compiled only 253 yards and one TD in 2006. Though some may compare him to Heath Miller he lacks that elite level of ball skills and route running but his upside is considerable. Think Billy Bajema. Small School Special Kolomona Kapanui 6'3.2" 267 Estimated 40 Time: 4.77 Kapanui has a surprising 40 time for his size. Kolo Kapanui recorded 286 yards in eight games last year, he should improve this year. Think of a faster Brandon Manamaleauna.

Running Backs

Running Backs 1st Yvenson Bernard Oregan State 5'9" 202 4.52 est: For all of the hype around the battalion of HS All-Americans at the position at USC and the deserved attention Torain at ASU and Markey at UCLA have received, my money is on Bernard to lead the PAC 10 in rushing. Like Mike Hart, Ray Rice and Ian Johnson, Yveson Bernard is a standout back who does not stand out in any obvious and measurable way. His size and long speed and not eye-popping, however his balance, vision, and quickness are truly exceptional. In his career the durable and productive runner has put up in 82 career games 601 rushes 2,648 yards for 4.4 ypa 25TDs and 611 catches for 7.5 ypc and 2TDs. Think of a quicker Rueben Droughns. 2nd Cory Byrd, South Carolina 40 Time: 4.48 est Senior Cory Byrd is the ideal tailback in Spurrier's offense. He's over 6 feet and weighs 214 pounds, is sneaky fast and catches the ball of the backfield extremely well; Byrd caught 35 passes for 406 receiving yards in 2006. He is a tough runner who can get the extra yard and has just enough cutting ability to shake defenders and make him very tough to bring down. His career stats are not terribly impressive-in 34 games he accounted for 284 rushes 1,364 yards 4.8 ypa 14TDs 81 catches for 898yards and 4 TDS. I think this will be a breakout year for the former standout prep safety and not unlike Marcus Allen another deceptively powerful, lanky former safety Boyd is very pro ready and could come close to equaling his previous stats this year. Think of a less high kneed Roger Craig. 3rd Dantrell Savage Oklahoma State Estimated 40 Time: 4.41 est At just less than 5'9" and about 194 is far from the biggest back in the Big 12, but he might be the fastest and is one of the best. And speaking of the best, he had some his best games against some of their best competition totalling more tha 100 rushing yards against Texas A&M, Nebraska, Baylor, Texas Tech and Alabama. Savage's 2006 totals in 11 he had 126Atts 820yards 6.5ypa 8TDs 8 receptions for 48 yards. Dantrell Savage may double those totals this year. Think a tougher Trung Candidate. Kalvin McRae Ohio U Estimated 40 Time: 4.51 At about 5-11 and 208 McRae has a good size speed mix. McRae rushed for 1,252 yards and 15 TDs, while catching 29 passes in 2006. With another year under Frank Solich and an ever-improving cast surrounding him, McRae may be a Doak Walker dark horse, he has 1,700 yard+ potential his career totals 36 games 609 rushes for 2,964yards 4.9 ypa 26TDs and 55 receptions 549 yards and 3 TDs Amir Pinnix 5'11 204 Estimated 40 Time: 4.53 Pinnix rushed for 1,272 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2006 despite not being the starter until Week 4. Though not as powerful as Moroney or Barber he can break tackles. If he is the starter all year 1,500+ yards is possible. Career totals- 35 games 356 rushes 1,876 yards 5.3 ypa 13 TDs 16catches and 138 yards.

The Other Guys

The "Other Guys" Not All Americans Not Quite All-Underappreciated I will do 3-5 "Other Guys" at each position. QBs: 1st Alex Brink is a 6-foot-3 207 pound senior quarterback at Washington State. Through his junior campaign, Brink has completed 57.3 percent of his passes for 7,095 yards. He has thrown 50 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. His quarterback efficiency rating is 131.78. Despite these good numbers, the Cougars have endured three straight seasons without a bowl berth. As a starter, Brink is 12-16 over the past three seasons. With a best 4.67 on a fast surface and with improved zip on the ball due to increased strength and better mechanics Brink could go from a fringe to a day 1 prospect with good workouts. During a game against Oregon State University in the 2005 season Brink set a new school record with 531 passing yards. Ahead 30-16 at the break, the Cougars, however, lost that game due in part to defensive and special teams lapses and other mistakes, but also because Brink threw 1 touchdown against 4 interceptions. For much of the 2006 season, Brink led the Pac-10 in passing yards. He was named second team All-Pac-10 for his efforts. The Cougars were at one point in the 2006 season ranked No. 25 in the nation with a 6-3 record, but lost their final three games to finish the year at 6-6. 2nd Chase Clement is not the preseason all conference this year, or even the best known QB prospect named Chase this year [Missou's Daniel is] nor the most physically imposing prospect at just over 6 feet even and around 208 lbs, his arm is not a cannon and though mobile he will not be mistaken for Steve Young or Mike Vick, however he is one of those QBs who just gets it done, [Think Jeff Garcia or Jim Zorn]. Clement Completed 57.7% of his passes (153 of 265) to just miss the school record of 57.8% by Bert Emanuel in 1993 and his 1,707 yards passing was the fifth best total in school history and the most by a Rice QB since 1990. He threw just five interceptions in 265 attempts, including a streak of 120 straight without an interception before throwing one against ECU on his last play of the regular season, also his total of 2,188 yards of total offense was fourth best in school history. 3rd Joe Flacco, Delaware-Though many are familiar with Ricky Santos, Flaacco at over 6'5" and 230 plus pounds might be a better prospect to transition from I-AA to NFL. This despite the fact taht he has battled to stay on the field at UD his career totals are Totals 14 games 265 Comps 421 Atts 2,794 yards 62.9% 18TDs 10 Ints.
