This isnt really a blog, but whatever. Ive been discussing circumcision with a friend, and in the process doing alot of research on it. There are religious, medical and cultural considerations on this issue. 60-70% of American males are circumcised. Jews and Muslims circumcise as a part of their religion. Studies are split on the issue, some showing medical benefits, others showing no benefits. Detractors argue psychological issues, but to date none have ever been statistically indicated. the American Association of Pediatrics official policy statement on circumcision is
"Existing scientific evidence demonstrates potential medical benefits of newborn male circumcision; however, these data are not sufficient to recommend routine neonatal circumcision. In circumstances in which there are potential benefits and risks, yet the procedure is not essential to the child's current well-being, parents should determine what is in the best interest of the child. To make an informed choice, parents of all male infants should be given accurate and unbiased information and be provided the opportunity to discuss this decision. If a decision for circumcision is made, procedural analgesia should be provided."
Given all the information available on the practice, I find myself still in support of it, and will still insist that my sons be circumcised. However, I would like to know what my friends opinions on the practice are. In other words, I demand your comments on this one.
