Children of the 80's unite! Okay Okay I know it has been awhile since I blogged. But you know me I don't blog unless something really hits me. So I'm sitting here yesterday trying to clean out my computer. I come across a program I forgot I had Limewire. So I starting looking up songs I grew up with.. okay I was feeling a little nostalgic..sue me. My roommate and I (which btw is only 2 years older than me) starting playing 80's music trivia with the songs that I had downloaded until 3:30 am. But then I really got to thinking about it. We are not really "Generation X" or the "Baby Boomer" generation. I would like to define us as the Children of the 80's! And there is NOTHING to be ashamed of that. Yes I owned a Rubiks cube... A real one. There was one word in fashion back then IZOD. I remember when MTV didn't even exisist and when it did come one it was not 24/7..it signed off just like the rest of the channels did. And dammit it played music videos!! (Trivia question: What was the first MTV video...and no cheating with Google search...if you are a true child of the 80's you will know this!) The M actually stood for Music...not Mundane! "Alternative" music was actually just that....not a Top 40 banner. Yes I was a Madonna wanna be...who wasn't amoung the girls. Come on guys you know you wanted to be Duran Duran and be one of those "Wild Boys". Everyone was chanting "Where's the beef?" instead of "WAZZZZZZUPPPP" And do you remember rotary phones? And who could forget Max Headroom...he was the effin coolest! Oh come on!!!! You know he was! Admit it! Let go of your Tears for Fears and admit it .... YOUR A CHILD OF THE 80'S! You knew how to (or atleast wanted to know how) Moonwalk! Playstation???? Oh Contaire Monfrair I spent hours playing Atari, Intellivision and Coleco trying to get that Pitfall Harry across all those treacherous pits. I would tear my room apart looking for my damn leg warmers to wear to school in 80 degree weather because that was the fashion statement. Not to mention friendship pins on my nike shoes. And making sure my flat handle comb was sticking out of the back pocket of my painted on jeans. I had to make sure my hair defied gravity at all times...much to the chargrin of my mother who was a hairdresser. And another thing that drove my mother crazy was the Valley Girl slang! It would "Like' Totally Barf her out fer sure! Transformers, Thundercats, Carebears, Smurfs, Rainbow Brite these were just a handful of the cartoons you could watch when you got home from school and of course most of us were a latchkey kid generation (Kids who came home to empty houses because your parents were at work) because half the kids in schools parents were divorced. And who could forget School House Rock! "Conjunction Junction what is your function?" Nickalodean finally had a show worth seeing "You can't do that on television" Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club (The Brat Pack in general) were the must see movies of all time not to mention Star Wars and Indiana Jones. As a nation we were dealing with Reagonomics and we tore down a very long wall over in Germany. Not to mention Gorbachev finally built a Micky D's in Russia. Speaking of food how could you not live without your Pop Rocks and Dr. Pepper. And Capri Sun?! You either LOVED IT or HATED IT there was no inbetween. But everyone loved ya some Kool Aid and Little Debbie Snack Cakes! School, where See See my Playmate, 4 square (or in our case 9 square) , Kickball and Dodgeball were the in games to play. Looking back the 80's really were not all that bad now were they? They are ours and the heritage that we have. So I'm proud to say I AM A CHILD OF THE 80's! And I love it and embrace it ... everyday.
