DETROIT -- Hours before falling out of first place, the Chicago White Sox added a veteran to their young bullpen. Ryan Tannehill White Jersey . The White Sox acquired Houston reliever Brett Myers on Saturday for two minor league pitchers and a player to be named. The 31-year-old Myers had 19 saves and a 3.52 ERA for the Astros this season. Chicago general manager Kenny Williams says Myers will pitch in relief for the White Sox but not as the closer. That job has been filled by 23-year-old Addison Reed, who has 15 saves but a 4.24 ERA. "In no way, for (manager Robin Ventura) or myself or in any way, is this a lack of confidence in Addison Reed," Williams said. The White Sox then went out and lost 7-1 on Saturday at Detroit, falling a half-game behind the Tigers atop the AL Central. They were set to send right-hander Dylan Axelrod down to the minors, making room for Myers. "Its time to make a push," Williams said. "Hes an intense competitor. He makes our bullpen better." The Astros are in last place in the NL Central and had little need to keep Myers. Houston receives right-hander Matt Heidenreich and left-hander Blair Walters. Chicago also receives cash considerations from Houston in the deal. Myers signed with the Astros as a free agent in January 2010 and made 33 starts in each of the past two seasons. The right-hander has been used exclusively in relief this year, and Chicago plans to put him in the bullpen, too. "Hes got a nice mix of pitches that he can go to as a former starter," Williams said. "I think he can do whatever role Robin decides to use him." In Phoenix, Astros manager Brad Mills said right-hander Francisco Cordero would replace Myers as closer. Cordero was acquired Friday in a 10-player trade with Toronto. He was 3-5 with two saves and a 5.77 ERA in 41 relief appearances with the Blue Jays this season. The Astros assigned Heidenreich to Double-A Corpus Christi and Walters to Class A Lancaster. Myers roster spot in Houston was taken by left-hander Dallas Keuchel, who was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start Saturday nights game in Arizona. J.A. Happ, who had been scheduled for that start, was part of the Toronto deal. Chicago also activated right-hander Jesse Crain from the disabled list Saturday, giving Ventura another option out of the bullpen. Along with Reed, the White Sox have relied on rookie Nate Jones, who has a 3.57 ERA in 35 appearances this year, and 24-year-old left-hander Hector Santiago, who has a 4.15 ERA in 29 appearances. "Weve asked a lot of young guys (in the bullpen) and theyve done great," White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko said. "Any time you add a veteran to a bullpen, its a good thing, even if the guys in the bullpen had been pitching well." The 21-year-old Heidenreich was a 2009 draft pick. The 6-foot-5 right-hander went 9-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 18 starts this season with Class A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham. The 22-year-old Walters went 4-6 with a 3.96 ERA in 18 starts this year with Class A Kannapolis and Winston-Salem. He was picked in last years draft. Karlos Dansby Womens Jersey . It was hard to tell by listening to their coach, who all these years later still isnt a fan of the tie-breaker.It took one swing of the bat for the Winnipeg Goldeyes to sweep the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants right out of Shaw Park. It took a second swing to make it a rout. On Thursday night, in front 5,816 enthusiastic fans at the downtown ballpark in Winnipeg, Yurendell de Caster hit a grand slam home run in the fourth inning to turn a 4-2 Goldeyes lead into an 8-2 advantage. Then, in the sixth, Josh Mazzola hit a two-run bomb to make it 11-2 and although Sioux Falls scored a run in the ninth to make it an 11-3 final, the Goldeyes had plenty of runs to win the final game of this four-game series and sweep the Pheasants right out of Winnipeg. With the victory, the Goldeyes won their fourth straight game and completed the first half of the 2012 season with a record of 30-20. They also remained in first place in the North Division of the American Association. "The offense was really good tonight," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "Weve done some things the last couple of nights that we hadnt done in a while. We hit with men in scoring position and we just didnt get one hit with men in scoring position, we got multiple hits with men in scoring position. We had some good at bats, we pulled the ball and we got some runners from first to third on base hits. Those were all good signs. We did a lot of good things at the plate." Sioux Falls opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first off rookie lefthander Rich Hawkins, but the Goldeyes jumped all over Sioux Falls starter – and former Goldeyes righthander – Mark Michael in the bottom of one. Price Kendall led off with a double and scored on a single by Jon Weber. Weber went to third on a single by de Caster and then scored on a ground out by Luis Alen. De Caster eventually scored on a single by Kyle Day. Sioux Falls made it 3-2 in the top of thhe second, but the Goldeyes answered with a run in the bottom of the second as Kendall was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single by Weber. Ryan Tannehill Youth Jersey. In the fourth, the Fish put the game and the series to sleep. Kendall led off with a single, Ridge Carpenter doubled to put runners on second and third, Weber walked and de Caster hit a fastball from Michael off Waterfront Drive behind the leftfield wall. Suddenly it was 8-2 and the Fish were cruising. Dan Barbero drove in the fifth run of the fourth inning to make it 9-2 and then, in the fifth, Day singled and Mazzola blasted waist-high fastball over the leftfield fence to make it 11-2. The Goldeyes had 16 hits, the second-highest total of the season (17 on June 7 in Lincoln). For the second straight night, Mazzola and de Caster were lights-out. Mazzola went three-for-four with a walk, a homer, a run scored and two RBI while de Caster went three-for-four with a walk, a grand slam, two runs scored and four RBI. In the final three games of the series, Mazzola had eight hits, six runs scored and five RBI while de Caster had eight hits, four runs scored and seven RBI. Mazzola has raised his batting average from .273 to .299, while de Caster has raised his average from .318 to .347. "Im seeing the ball really well and Ive made a couple of tweaks to my swing," Mazzola said. "Its just getting the at bats. I started slowly, but I knew all along that Id start to hit." Hawkins got the win (3-1, 6.17 ERA) while Michael (5-4, 5.88 ERA) suffered the loss. The Goldeyes will have today off and then on Thursday will open a four-game series at Shaw Park with the St. Paul Saints. Matt Rusch (5-1 2.35 ERA) will take the ball for the Fish. Game time is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play. ' ' '
