How many gallons of wine are in a single barrel? 60 How many gallons of wine are produced from one acre of grapevines? About 800 How many grapes does it take to make your average bottle of wine? It takes about 2.5 pounds of grapes to make a bottle of wine. What is "The Whistler Tree"? The largest cork tree in the world is known as ‘The Whistler Tree’. This tree is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal and averages over 1 ton of raw cork per harvest. Enough to cork 100,000 bottles of wine. What's the world's largest wine bottle? Concept founder Kim Bullock, owner of 'North Road Liquor' in Albany, has a passion for the Great Southern Region and their wines. Kim created the big bottle to provide focus on the region and to showcase the stunning, premium quality varietal wines. Almost two metres high and 520mm in diameter, the 290 litre Five Virtues will fill 1935 glasses. It equates to 387 standard wine bottles, or 32,25 cases, is made of 100% continously formed glass and sealed with Portuguese cork. David Jones of 'Great Southern Packaging' based in Albany facilitated the making of the Big Bottle. The bottle was crafted in West Germany in a joint effort by LENZ Laborglas GMBH & Co KG of Wertheim, which handled the design and logistics, and QVF of Mainz, which handled the production. David was also instrumental in the procuring of the very large cork from Portugal. When was the first wine produced in the world? Wine and fermented juices have played a role in civilization for at least 7,000 years. Records by Egyptians give the first written account of grape wine, and date to around 2500 B.C. Egyptians employed much the same method for producing wines as are present today, including cultivating, fermenting, bottling, and storing wines. As with any refined skill that has weathered the years, the knowledge of wine-making has come and gone, its methods have evolved, and the final product has flourished. Where does the shape of vintage champagne glasses come from? Here's a little story behind the champagne glass, dating back to Greek mythology. The first "coupe" was said to be molded from the breast of Helen of Troy. The Greeks believed that wine drinking was a sensual experience, and it was only fitting that the most beautiful woman take part in shaping the chalice. Centuries later, Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, decided it was time to create a new champagne glass. She had coupes molded to her own breasts, which changed the shape of the glass entirely, since Marie Antoinette was - shall we say- better endowed than Helen of Troy. Why is there a dent in the bottom of a wine bottle? It's called a punt. The purpose of the indentation at the bottom of a wine bottle is to strengthen the structure of the bottle and to trap the sediments in the wine.
