Officials have released the names of those involved in a Monday morning hit-and-run car accident which claimed the life of a Lemoore woman.

The accident resulted in the death of Corliss Harbor, 19, of Lemoore, and the arrest of Benjamin Lopez, 23, of Armona.

Lopez is being held in Kings County Jail on felony hit and run charges and a misdemeanor charge of driving without a license. His bail is set at $35,000.

Heading east on Jackson Avenue in her 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, Harbor stopped for the stop sign at 14th Avenue.

According to reports, Harbor failed to notice Lopez approaching the intersection from the north, and entered into the intersection directly into the path of Lopez's 2003 Chevy Silverado.

The front of the Silverado broadsided the Lancer on the left side.

"There was no real reason for this to happen at all," said Highway Patrol spokesman Jerry Pierce. Pierce said it was clear and there were no known visual obstructions which would have prevented Harbor from seeing the oncoming vehicle.

Following the accident, Lopez tried to escape by foot, but authorities apprehended him approximately a quarter mile southwest of the collision scene.

"I can say with a great deal of confidence that if (Lopez) would have remained at the scene, he would never have been arrested," Pierce said.

However, "he should never have been driving in the first place," said Pierce, referring to the fact that Lopez did not have a valid driver's license.

Harbor's passenger, William Cobine, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Hanford Community Medical Center, while Lopez was uninjured.

A representative from HCMC said that a lifeflight helicopter was called to the scene, but was never utilized. An onlooker reported seeing several patrol cars following an ambulance to the hospital.

All three were wearing seatbelts.
