These Eyes
by John P Reed
These eyes the ones
I catch you staring at
you say are windows to eternity
the very eyes you once fell into
have seen so much of love
that they shine with it
even when I can't feel
love going out or coming in
my eyes are not windows
to my soul or anything else
they do not open anymore
they simply are never closed
they have seen death and life
and so much in-between
that I cannot even find words
for the parallels they see now
I see things that you
and you and yes even you
do not dream exist
wouldn't want to know do
You could not face them
if I showed them to you
and they are terribly
horribly beautiful
that's why my eyes
dance and smile
in the face of all
of the gods twisted irony
not at the joy of it,
but at the inevitability
of your eyes one day
seeing these things too
knowing this my eyes smile
love shines out of these eyes
knowing that this visage
will one day be yours too
