Robin Cropper English Comp. 2 Mon & Wed Evenings Illegal Immigration: The Impact on Our Tax Dollars “According to the research of Time Magazine more than three million people entered the United States illegally in the year 2004 alone. That is more than 8,000 people a day, and enough to fill 22,000 Boeing 737 airliners, or 66 flights every day for a year. U.S. Boarder Patrol stopped 55,890 other than Mexican aliens (OTMs) from October 2003 to August 2004.” ( Californrepublic. “Illegal Immigration: The U.S. Economy & Homeland Security.” 5/15/06. http://www.progressiveu.org/062659-illegal-immigration-the-u-s-economy-homeland-security. 3/14/2007) The financial impact created by illegal immigrants on the American economy stems from the costs of healthcare, education, and housing criminals. The strain starts with the basic necessities, one being healthcare. Any child that is born in the United States is considered a United States citizen and they are eligible for federally funded medical aid. Illegal aliens, and their children, account for approximately 2.5 billion a year in Medicaid. Another 2.2 billion dollars is spent by hospitals to cover procedures performed on uninsured illegal aliens This is one of the reasons health care costs are rising at such a rapid pace. An estimated 383,000 children are born each year to mothers who are illegal aliens. Those children will eventually attend public school. All children are granted the right to attend public school and an estimated 1.4 billion a year in federal aid to schools is being used to educate them. Yes, these children do have the right to attend school but why have their parents not taken the extra step to become legal citizens or obtain a visa? It is also not fair for the American tax payers to have to pay for illegal aliens to not only give birth here but also pay to raise, educate, and provide medical care for their children. “There are also approximately 65,000 illegal aliens who graduate from our nations high schools each year. In 1996 it cost about $8 billion a year just to provide a primary education for illegal aliens at the federal, state, and local levels.” ("The Estimated Cost of Illegal Immigration," Federation for American Immigration Reform policy paper, June 2004) In December 2002, the U.S. Bureau of Justice reported that the total prison population was 2,166,260 inmates. Of that, twenty nine percent are illegal aliens. This costs approximately two billion dollars a year, for prison incarceration alone. On average, 190,000 illegal immigrants are held in city, county, state or federal holding facilities and jails at costs of more than ten billion a year. Those numbers are not including the costs for court appointed attorneys and the time and money it takes to also take them court of deportation hearings. We are providing food, clothing, shelter, and cable television to illegal alien criminals. Many will admit that they come to the United States to be in prison just so they do not have to work and are still able to live better than they were while in Mexico. They will also tell you, once they are released they plan to come back to the United States and commit other crimes just to be placed back into the prison system. When does this vicious cycle end? How long do we continue to pay for illegal aliens to live in our country?
